action
A zombie epidemic struck the United States and killed millions. The government can take strict measures to contain the epidemic . A runaway from Kansas City, Maggie, is one of the last to be infected.
Her father, Wade Vogel, finds her in a clinic after a two-week search and takes her home. He is given behavioral tips and hints as to when it is time to put his daughter in quarantine . The transformation into a “living dead” takes place gradually and can take up to six months. Wade's second wife, Caroline, is not enthusiastic about this, as she sees the dangers that Maggie poses for their children. Thus the daughter and son are brought to an aunt.
Doctor friend Vern Kaplan, who had already helped get Maggie out of the hospital, Wade lists the possibilities for the end:
- Quarantine Maggie;
- give her the drug cocktail used for euthanasia in quarantine with her family; which, however, would mean a painful death;
- bring about their death in other ways, briefly and painlessly.
Allie, a school friend, picks up Maggie for an evening with friends. Maggie meets Trent, who is also infected. Trent tells of the quarantine and that all stages of the disease are housed there together. More infected people eat their fellow sufferers and the carers do nothing about it. Shortly after the evening, the time has come for Trent: He has to go into quarantine and refuses. Maggie is summoned and is supposed to change Trent's mind. Finally, a "large contingent" of police officers arrives and leads him away. Maggie is brought home by the cops.
Maggie knows about the possibilities for her father to deal with her end. She wants to spare him this and kisses him goodbye while he sleeps on the armchair and chooses suicide.
