Mayim Chaya Bialik (born December 12, 1975 in San Diego , California ) is an American neuroscientist , author and actress . She first became known for her leading role as Blossom Russo in the television series Blossom and later as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory series .

Life

She was born in San Diego in 1975 to Barry Bialik and Beverly Winkelman and has a brother. She has Polish Jewish , Czech Jewish, and Hungarian Jewish ancestors who emigrated to the United States in the early 1930s . Her first name Mayim is Hebrew and means water , her last name was derived from the Polish word Biały , which means white . She attended Walter Reed Junior High School in North Hollywood . After the end of the series Blossom , she studied at the University of California, Los Angeles . In 2001 she did her Bachelor of Science and in 2007 her PhD in Neuroscience . In her work she dealt with the Prader-Willi syndrome . Bialik comes from a Jewish family and practices a more secular interpretation of Orthodox Judaism and is also an avowed Zionist .

She plays the piano , trumpet , harp and bass guitar and speaks fluent Spanish . From 2003 to 2013 she was married to Michael Stone; the couple has two children. In March 2012 the book Beyond the Sling , written by Bialik, was published , which deals with attachment parenting . Bialik is vegan , supports animal rights with the PETA campaign “ Get rid of meat - become vegan” and is co-author of a cookbook on vegan cuisine. Also in 2012, Bialik was introduced as the spokeswoman for the US technology group Texas Instruments . As part of the collaboration, she wants to get young people excited about mathematics and science .

In 1989 she won the Young Artist Award for "Best Young Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Fantasy" for her role in the film Girlfriends . There she played Bette Midler as a child. According to her own admission, this role was responsible for her getting the central lead role in Blossom in 1990 , which she held in all 114 episodes of the series until 1995.

During her time at UCLA, she was only sporadically seen as an actress in various series (e.g. Fat Actress ) . At the same time she also worked as a voice actress for cartoons and video games. In 2005 she first appeared again in a leading role in the film Kalamazoo? with and appeared in three episodes of the series Lass es, Larry! from 2005 to 2007 . as Jodi Funkhouser. From 2010 to 2019 she worked as Amy Farrah Fowler on the CBS - sitcom The Big Bang Theory see where she performed on their own degree as a doctorate neurobiologist in direct allusion. Her performance earned her an Emmy nomination in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 .

Since 2015 she has also been pursuing a career as a YouTuber with the “GrokNation” channel, on which she explains scientific topics in an understandable way, discusses socially critical topics and communicates Jewish traditions.
