The Secret Life of the American Teenager (also briefly only Secret Life or acronym also TSLOTAT ) is an American teen drama series, which from 1 July 2008 until June 3, 2013, ABC Family aired. The series consists of five seasons with 121 episodes and is set at a California high school . The main topics are sex, unwanted pregnancies, and relationships among students.

The series is set at a high school in California, USA . It's mostly about sex, unwanted pregnancies, and relationships between students. When the student Amy Juergens returns from the band summer camp after the holidays, she discovers that she became pregnant at a one-night stand with the notorious school casanova Ricky. The ideal world around her is breaking apart more and more. It turns out that each of her classmates has their own, often secret, problem.

- is an intelligent, yet very naive and sensitive girl who lives with her parents Anne and George as well as his younger sister Ashley. In the school band's summer camp, the French horn player lets herself be seduced by Ricky of the same age and becomes pregnant in the process. In the course of the series, however, she has to deal with the situation and its consequences for her life and that of those around her. The series first aired on July 1, 2008 on ABC Family in the United States. Since only 11 episodes were completed for the first season and only later the other 12 episodes, the season was divided into two parts. The same was done with the following seasons. The second season aired June 22, 2009 through March 22, 2010 of ABC Family. The third season ran on the same channel from June 2010 to June 2011 and the fourth season from June 2011 to June 2012. In June 2012, the fifth and final season began broadcasting, the last episode of which was broadcast on June 3, 2013.

The series was nominated a total of 9 times at the Teen Choice Awards and won two awards (2008: Best Show of the Summer, 2009: Best Male Actor (Daren Kagasoff aka Ricky )).

With her new TV series, successful author Brenda Hampton (“A Heavenly Family”) touches on a subject that is often taboo in the USA - and this is certainly one of the reasons why “The Secret Life of American Teenagers” became a long-running hit with US television audiences. The TV critics praised the series above all for its realism and awarded the first season with a "Teen Choice Award".
