action

Thirteen-year-old Grace MacLean and her friend Judith take a ride through the snowy landscape one winter morning. The horses lose their grip on an icy slope and slide with the riders onto a street where an approaching truck can no longer evade. Judith and her horse are killed instantly, Grace and her horse Pilgrim survive seriously injured. Grace's right lower leg is amputated . The horse is not only badly injured, it is also so emotionally traumatized that it no longer allows anyone to approach it. Grace's mother Annie is advised to put Pilgrim to sleep.

Annie, a successful magazine editor, refuses to give up on Pilgrim. She sets out to look for a solution just as resolutely and intensively as in professional research. She learns about the horse whisperer Tom Booker in Montana and asks him over the phone to come to New York and see Pilgrim. But Booker firmly refuses, as he does not see himself as a paid healer for hopeless horses.

Undeterred, Annie sets off with Grace and Pilgrim across the continent to Tom Booker's ranch. Under the impression of getting to know each other personally, Booker now declares that he is ready to give at least one try.

Little by little, Pilgrim trusts Booker, but the presence of other people keeps causing him to panic. Booker soon realizes that he not only has to treat Pilgrim, but also has to get Grace out of her depression and her adolescent shell. He makes it clear to Grace that Pilgrim loves her and can only get well again with her cooperation.

Because therapy is time-consuming, Annie and Grace end up spending the summer at the Booker Ranch. Not only pilgrims are healed; The mother who controls everything and the daughter she often ignores also change. Grace finds a new friend in Tom's nephew and regains her self-confidence at work on the ranch. Annie loses her lucrative job due to her long absence from Manhattan, but learns to appreciate the benefits of the quiet country life and falls in love with Tom. However, it remains with a few longing looks, an erotic dance at the village festival and a single long kiss. Annie eventually leaves the ranch and Tom watches her from a hill

background

On the one hand, it is said that the character Tom Booker was drawn after the most famous “real” horse whisperer Monty Roberts . His teaching is based on non-violent communication in body language that animals can understand. He not only breaks in young horses, but also helps problem horses to overcome their fears. Even if there are numerous parallels between his work and the film, the author of the novel, Nicholas Evans, denies that Monty Roberts was the model for the fictional character. According to him, the main character of the film is based on Tom Dorrance , Ray Hunt and especially Buck Brannaman .

Although the novel is a fictional story, Evans himself said:

“Others were mistakenly mistaken for the inspiration for the character of Tom Booker in The Horse Whisperer. The only one who really inspired me was Buck Brannaman. His skill, understanding, and gentle, loving manner have divided the clouds for countless restless beings. Buck is the Zen master of horses. "

Brannaman was the lead advisor on the filming involving horses and doubled Robert Redford in individual scenes.
