The Mavericks
The Mavericks are one in Florida -based country rock - band . Members are Raul Malo (born August 7, 1965 in Miami ), Robert Reynolds (born April 30, 1962 in Kansas City , Missouri ), Paul Deakin (born September 2, 1959 in Miami) and Nick Kane (born August 21, 1954 in Jerusalem , Georgia ). The pianist Jerry Dale McFadden took part in some of the recordings.
biography
A passion for records from the rock 'n' roll era brought Raul Malo, Robert Reynolds and Paul Deakin together in Miami in the late 1980s . They still knew each other from school. Everyone had already gained experience in different bands. As The Mavericks, the group first made a name for themselves as a live band in the greater Miami area. At the end of 1990 a self-financed album was recorded, which only contained Raul Malo compositions. Various record companies tried to get the trio. Finally, the contract was signed with MCA .
Experienced lead guitarist David Lee Holt was hired to produce their first album, From Hell to Paradise . Most of the songs came from Raul Malo. The sales figures, however, fell short of expectations, although the critics were more than impressed by the musical quality. The second album, What a Crying Shame , broke through in 1994. It sold over a million times in the US and went platinum there. David Lee Holt then left the group and was replaced by Nick Kane. The next album, Music for All Occasions , was also successful and received gold in America and silver in England. The group received numerous awards in those years, including a Grammy and two CMA Awards for "Vocal Group of the Year".
The musically extremely diverse album Trampoline , released in 1998, sold particularly well in Europe . Especially in Great Britain , where the Mavericks gave several sold out concerts in 1998 and 1999, a solid fan base was formed. Dance the Night Away , which was released from the platinum award-winning album Trampoline , reached fourth place in the British singles charts ; the associated video clip was also played very often on popular music channels in Germany . The rather untypical sound for a country band with a hard rhythm section and the voice of their Cuban-born frontman Raul Malo, reminiscent of Roy Orbison , played a decisive role in this.
In 1999 the collaboration with MCA was ended. Nick Kane left the group. The remaining three members also increasingly devoted themselves to solo projects. For a time the Mavericks were no more. In 2003 they got back together and signed with the small London label Sanctuary . Here the album The Mavericks was produced in the same year , which in turn mainly contained songs by Raul Malo.
