geography

Knutsford is on the Cheshire Plain between the Peak District to the east and the Welsh hill country to the west, in the so-called Golden Triangle of Cheshire, which is characterized by affluent communities with affluent residents. The area is dominated by agriculture. North of the city is Tatton Park, with a historic manor house.

history

In the Domesday Book of 1086, the city is called Cunetesford ("Furt des Knut"). Canute the Great was King of England from 1016 to 1035 and later also ruler of Denmark, Norway and parts of Sweden. According to tradition, it is said to have crossed the Lily River here at a ford , but it may also have been the Birkin Brook. The English Place-Name Society derives the place name from the old English Knutr’s ford , which is also interpreted as hillock ford (ford on a hill).

A Knutsford prison was built in 1817 and expanded in 1853. It served as a military prison during World War I and was demolished in 1934.

After the Second World War , alternative residential areas for Manchester families were built in Knutsford , one of them (Longridge) in the 1950s at the instigation of Manchester City Council. All houses in this neighborhood that had not been sold to residents by the end of the 20th century were then transferred to Manchester Methodist Housing.

In 2005, Knutsford was recognized as the city with the highest priced residential property in northern England, followed by nearby Altrincham . However, prices vary widely even within a property category.

administration

The former three each send three representatives to the council (who are elected for four years), Over, the largest, sends six.
