Macclesfield was a district with the status of a borough in the county of Cheshire in England . The administrative seat was the city of Macclesfield , in which around a third of the population lived. Other significant places were Alderley Edge , Bollington , Knutsford and Wilmslow .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the Municipal Borough Macclesfield, the Urban Districts Alderley Edge, Bollington, Knutsford and Wilmslow and the Rural District Bucklow. On April 1, 2009 it was dissolved due to a territorial and administrative reform and went into the new Unitary Authority Cheshire East .
