Martin Bell (born August 31, 1938 in Redisham , Suffolk ) is a former British news anchor and politician .

After graduating from King's College in Cambridge , he worked for the BBC as a foreign correspondent from 1962 . For his work he was named Royal Television Society's Reporter of the Year in 1977 and 1993 , and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1992 .

After his resignation, he represented his constituency of Cheshire in the British Parliament as an independent candidate from 1997 until his unsuccessful run for re-election in 2001 . He is now working as an ambassador for UNICEF and ran unsuccessfully as a candidate for the European Parliament elections in 2004 .
