Mary and the witch's flower ( Japanese メ ア リ と 魔女 の 花 , Meari to Majo no Hana ) is a cartoon released in 2017 by the studio Ponoc , directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and produced by Yoshiaki Nishimura . It is based on the children's book "The Bewitched Broom" by Mary Stewart . It is Studio Ponoc's first feature film and grossed $ 41.7 million worldwide.

The film tells the story of a girl named Mary Smith, who finds a mysterious flower called “Night Flight ” ( 夜間 飛行 , Yakan Hikō ). This flower gives her the strength to become a witch for one night. The film was released in Japan on July 8, 2017. In Germany, the film was shown in selected cinemas on September 13 and 16, 2018.

action

A magical laboratory has caught fire. A red-haired girl slips away with a bag, but is seen and followed. The girl manages to escape on her flying broom, but a massive explosion knocks her off her broom. The broom and the bag fall to the floor. Magic seeds spill out of the bag, making the plants and animals in the area grow quickly.

The young Mary Smith moves into her great-aunt Charlotte's British estate. The bored, friendless girl creates confusion while trying to make herself useful by doing household chores. A local boy named Peter annoys her for her clumsiness and wild red hair, which she hates.

Tib and Gib, Peter's cats, lead Mary to mysteriously glowing flowers in the forest. Zebedee, the estate gardener, assigns the flowers to the “night flight” species, which are said to confer magical powers. The next day, Gib disappears and Mary follows Tib to look for her. Tib leads them to a broomstick caught in a tree root. Mary frees the broom, but accidentally breaks a "night flight". The flower releases magical power in the form of a blue gelatinous substance, which spreads over the broom, whereupon it comes to life and allows Mary to ride it like a witch. The little broom kidnaps Mary and Tib to a complex of buildings that is hidden in the clouds. Flanagan, a fox creature who takes care of the students' brooms, scolds her for crashing her broom and tells her that she is at Endor University for Witches.

The headmistress, Madam Mumblechook, assumes Mary is a new student, with Tib more confidant, and takes her on a tour of the university. The tour unveils a campus of modern technology and amenities where witches take courses in magical arts alongside areas of science such as chemistry. During the tour Madam Mary leads to Doctor Dee, the famous chemistry professor at the university. Mary can perform advanced spells like invisibility. Madam Mumblechook and Doctor Dee believe that Mary is a child prodigy because of her performance and red hair, which is a hallmark of the strongest witches.

In Madam's office, Mary finds a magic book that is hidden behind a picture of a “night flight”. Mary admits that her magical ability comes from the "night flight" and that Tib actually belongs to Peter. Madam Mumblechook's attitude towards Mary suddenly changes, but she lets Mary return home. The magic granted to Mary by the flower ends when the sun goes down, and Mary barely manages to get home safely. That night, Madam Mumblechook sends Mary a message informing her that she has kidnapped Peter and requests that Mary bring her the "Night Flight" flower. She and Tib fly back to Endor with the flowers. Madam Mumblechook and Doctor Dee lock them up in Doctor Dee's transformation lab. Mary finds Peter in the lab and discovers that Doctor Dee has experimented on animals, including Gib, and turned them into fantastic creatures. In the spell book, Mary finds a spell that can undo all magic and uses it to undo all transformations and unlock the laboratory. When they try to escape, they find themselves cornered on a balcony, only to have Flanagan take away the small broom and he berates Mary for leaving the broom lying around. Mary then escapes, but Madam Mumblechook and Doctor Dee catch Peter again.

The little broom brings Mary to an isolated house. In the cabin, Mary finds notes on transmutation spells and a mirror that Great-Aunt Charlotte uses to contact her. Charlotte reveals that the cabin was her previous home and she herself a red-haired student in Endor, just like the one from the introduction. One day Charlotte found the “night flight”, which forced Madam Mumblechook and Doctor Dee to pursue a project to use the flower to turn people into witches. When her experiment failed catastrophically, Charlotte decided to escape Endor and take the flower with her. Charlotte asks Mary to use her last bud to return home, but Mary vows to save Peter instead.

When Mary tries to return to Endor, Madam Mumblechook chases her down and reclaims the spellbook. The book is in air tracking and Mary crashes near the lab. The little broom breaks and the magic of the flower dies. Mary makes her way to the lab and finds that Madam Mumblechook and Doctor Dee are trying to use the flower to turn Peter into an all-powerful witch. The experiment fails again and leaves Peter trapped in a gall-like monster that rages through the laboratory, consuming the magic of everyone on its way. Mary gets the spell book from Madam Mumblechook and realizes that Peter can now use magic. She takes Peter's hand from the inside of the monster and gives him the book with the spell to reverse the magic so he can activate it. It reverses the failed experiment and all related investigations by Madam Mumblechook and Doctor Dee. The laboratory is destroyed.

Mary wakes up in the ruins of the laboratory, which is completely overgrown. Flanagan gives her back her broom after he fixes it and scolds her for leaving her broom wherever she wants. The two take the broom home with them, but as it flies, Peter sees a "night flight" bud in her hair. She throws them away and says she doesn't need magic anymore. The last bud of the flower explodes in midair, making it clear that it no longer needs magic. Mary returns home and goes to school with Peter. The little broom leans against the wall of the mansion, home.
