Studio Ponoc ( Japanese 株式会社 ス タ ジ オ ポ ノ ッ ク , Kabushiki-gaisha Sutajio Ponokku ) is a Japanese animation film studio based in Musashino , Tokyo , Japan . The company was founded in April 2015 by former Studio Ghibli lead film producer Yoshiaki Nishimura . The first feature film , Mary and the Witch's Flower , was released across Japan on July 8, 2017.

history

Yoshiaki Nishimura founded Studio Ponoc on April 15, 2015 and was supported by several writers who previously worked at Studio Ghibli , including director Hiromasa Yonebayashi . The name of the studio comes from the Croatian word ponoć for "midnight", which means "the beginning of a new day".

The studio is working on an ad for JR West for its 2015 summer campaign. Mary and the Witches ' Flower , the studio's first feature film, was ranked sixth among the top grossing films of the year in Japan. The film is based on the children's book " The Bewitched Broom " by Mary Stewart . Several former Studio Ghibli employees have joined the studio to work on the film.
