Your Juliet (original title The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society ) is a historical film drama by Mike Newell , which was released in German cinemas on August 9, 2018.

action

The open-minded journalist Juliet Ashton travels to Britain's Guernsey Island in the English Channel in the late 1940s after receiving a letter from a rather strange man named Dawsey Adams, who lives there. During the lively correspondence, she learned that a book club was being formed on the British Isles during the Nazi occupation in World War II , and Juliet decided to write about this club. She gets to know the residents and talks to them about their experiences in the war. Juliet also has to choose between love for her fiancé Mark and Dawsey.

Literary template

Your Juliet is based on the historical novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by the American author Mary Ann Shaffer . After unsuccessful research into another biography, Shaffer was stuck on vacation at the airport on Guernsey Island and read several works in the bookstore there on the German occupation of the islands during World War II. After she had actually finished the book in 2006, her publisher requested extensive changes, which she could not make due to her deteriorating health. So she passed the task on to her niece Annie Barrows . Ultimately, the book was published in 2008. In Germany, the novel was published under the title Deine Juliet with the addition of the Club of Guernsey Friends of Poetry and Potato Peel Casserole .

production

The port of Saint Peter Port

Directed by Mike Mike Newell . Shaffers and Barrows' novel was adapted for the film by Thomas Bezucha and Don Roos .

In October 2016, it was announced that Lily James had received a role in the film. She plays Juliet Ashton. In the German dubbing, Giuliana Jakobeit lends her voice.

The Channel Islands were the only area of the British Isles and the British Empire that was occupied by the German Wehrmacht during World War II. The action takes place partly in London and especially on Guernsey , the second largest of the British Channel Islands, which also gave the novel its name and whose main location is, and at the port of its capital Saint Peter Port . In actual fact, the film was only filmed in England, not on Guernsey itself. Outdoor shots were taken at the Rectory Farm in Morwenstow in Cornwall and on the local coast. Other shots were taken at Saunton Sands in the fishing village of Clovelly , a UNESCO biosphere reserve that has more than once been a historic setting for the film and music scene, and indoor and outdoor shots in the town of Bideford, Devon. Further exterior shots were taken at the London Charterhouse . The shooting took place from March to May 2017.

The score was composed by Alexandra Harwood . The soundtrack to the film, which includes 18 pieces of music, was released for download by Decca Classics on May 18, 2018.

In mid-May 2017, the first set photos of Lily James from the film were released. A first German trailer followed in April 2018.

The film premiered in London on April 9, 2018 and was released in cinemas in the United Kingdom on April 20, 2018. A theatrical release in Germany took place on August 9, 2018.

Reviews

Lily James , shown here a few weeks after filming was finished, can be seen in the film in the title role of Juliet

The film was rated rather positively by 82 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics .

The film critic Antje Wessels explains that the director Mike Newell devotes himself equally to the dramatic, the comic and the amorous aspects of his story, and only gets bogged down a bit at the very end: “Stylishly and without any gimmicky, Newell stages both devastating moments like those , in which a mother learns about the loss of her daughter, as well as amusing conversations with women between Juliet and her new friend Isola (Katherina Parkinson), who wants to know absolutely everything about Juliet's stories of men. Even the cautious getting to know each other between the author and the single parent Dawsey is pleasantly calm at first and consists only of playful looks and brief touches. "

Birgit Roschy from epd Film thinks that Juliet is an unexpectedly emancipated heroine, vulnerable and yet unwaveringly following her instincts. Nevertheless, the staging does not always escape kitsch: “The love story is thin, the central figure of Elizabeth is stylized as a saint and the happy ending is sugar-coated. On the other hand, Newell [...] depicts the emerging tragedies in an appealing manner. "

Susanne Ostwald calls Newell a “master of nuances” in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . In the film, “the interplay of conflicting intentions and views, emotions and narratives is finely balanced”. Her conclusion is: "It's a beautiful film that celebrates humanity."
