Dance with a Stranger (alternatively: Dance with a stranger , loved to death ) is a British film biography of Mike Newell from the year 1985 .
action
The film tells the story of Ruth Ellis , manager of a nightclub and the single mother of a ten year old son. She still has a daughter who lives with Ruth's ex-husband.
Ellis meets noble David Blakeley at the club, with whom she has a relationship. She accompanies him to car races in which he participates as a racing driver. Blakeley turns out to be a drinker and there are frequent arguments between him and Ellis. After one of these arguments and the subsequent brawl at the club, Ellis is fired.
Ellis has to move out of the apartment above the club rooms. She moves in to be friends with Desmond Cussen, but continues to meet with Blakeley. One day Cussen confronts her and learns about the meeting between her and Blakeley. After a while, Blakeley distanced himself from Ellis. She kills him, is sentenced to death and executed.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of August 23, 1985 that the case portrayed in the film was one of those most intriguing to the British - as Ebert suspected, because sexuality and the class system come into play; two subjects that the British are most interested in. The representations are " astonishing ", the dark-looking images give the film a corresponding atmosphere (" a film of astonishing performances and moody, atmospheric visuals "). The film does not allow itself any attempts at " superficial psychology " (" shallow psychology ").
