Stratford Johns

Alan Edgar Stratford Johns (born September 22, 1925 in Pietermaritzburg , South Africa , † January 29, 2002 in Heveningham , Suffolk , England ) was a British actor .

Life

Johns attended St Charles School in Natal Colony and served in the South African Navy during World War II . In 1948 he moved to England, where he first appeared in variety shows . In the 1950s he received his first small film roles, including in Ladykillers . In 1962 he got the role of police officer Charlie Barlow in the crime series Z Cars . Between 1966 and 1969 he carried out the role in the spin-off Softly Softly , and then in Softly Softly: Task Force . Three other spin-offs followed in the 1970s, Barlow at Large , Barlow and Second Verdict . Johns played Barlow for a total of 14 years, but was also seen in other roles occasionally; so he appeared in guest roles in the series Department S and Doctor Who, among others . He was also a regular guest at the theaters of London's West End . In addition, as Ishmael in The Malicious Game of Dr. Fu Man Chu , as Mustapha El Ali in Wildgänse 2 and as Peters in The Snake Woman's Bite .

Johns was married to actress Nanette Ryder from 1955 until his death, and they had four children.
