action

Prince Tommy Butterfly Rainbow Peace Patel and Henry Bullock were swapped as babies. Tommy Butterfly was adopted by an Indian family and grew up in London . Henry Bullock grew up with the Duchess Lucinda in the USA .

Bullock comes to England to inspect his supposed possessions. It just so happens that the real prince is professionally obliged to look after Bullock. Henry considers Tommy a friend. He and Tommy celebrate with money that Tommy takes from the company's postage at Henry's instigation. Tommy is to be fired for this, but the old Duke has since died and Henry takes over the management of the company.

Tommy learns about his parentage and turns to attorney Raoul P. Shadgrind. He gives Tommy advice on how to murder Henry, which Tommy refuses at first.

Tommy is seduced by Kitty, with whom he falls in love. The next day he learns that Kitty is to marry Henry and is only looking for the last adventure before their wedding. He then undertakes a number of attacks on Henry, all of which fail.

When there is no murder, Shadgrind appears at the country estate where Henry and Tommy are staying. He tries to shoot Henry, which he fails. Shadgrind flees from a big cat kept on the property.

Henry and Tommy come to terms with each other in the end. Henry is shown rollerblading tourists around the property.

Reviews

  • The critics of the Fischer Film Almanach 1994 say: “Turbulent, but not particularly funny. Eric Idle (...) wrote a rather anemic script for these blue-blooded clothes. The cast keeps what they promise - but the humor is no longer as apt, abstruse and corrosive as we expect from an ex-Monty python. "
  • The lexicon of international films wrote: "Little subtle comedy staged without humor or surprises."
  • James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that John Cleese was one of the masters of contemporary film comedy, but that even he could not save the film. Eric Idle - unlike in the past - seems uncomfortable. The portrayal of Rick Moranis is flat.
  • Roger Ebert criticized the cast in the April 30, 1993 Chicago Sun-Times , writing that it would have been better if Eric Idle and Rick Moranis had switched roles. Ebert praised the portrayal of Barbara Hershey.
  • Hal Hinson wrote in the Washington Post on May 4, 1993 that the comedy was "feeble". Only John Cleese, who "plays better than anyone else in the film", received praise.
