Lark Rise to Candleford is a British television series describing the life of the rural population towards the end of the 19th century, based on the novels by Flora Thompson published between 1939 and 1945: Lark Rise , Over to Candleford , Candleford Green and the Lark Rise to Candleford trilogy .
In Great Britain, the first season was broadcast in ten parts from January 13, 2008 on BBC One , in the United States it ran on the channel PBS for the first time in spring 2009. Despite high ratings on British television, the fourth season was announced as the final season and from Sent January 9th to February 13th 2011.
In German-speaking countries, the first season of the series was initially only available on the home entertainment market; the German dubbed version was released in 2009 as a two-part DVD box. The second season was only available in stores four years later, again in two parts from July 15 and August 19, 2013.
action
The series is set in the small hamlet of Lark Rise and the affluent neighboring market town of Candleford in Oxfordshire towards the end of the 19th century . The daily life of farm workers, craftsmen and the higher class is depicted and the colorful hustle and bustle of the characters in their everyday life, love affairs, needs and their competitive thinking with one another is described.
The narrative is portrayed through the eyes of 16-year-old girl Laura Timmins as she leaves Lark Rise to start a new life in Candleford under the protection of her aunt, the independent, bustling Dorcas Lane who runs the local post office . In the process, she learns the difference between the rural, traditional Lark Rise and the future- oriented Candleford .
Characters
In Candleford
- Laura Timmins
- 16-year-old Laura, the eldest of the Timmins children, is from Lark Rise. Since she is very clever and inquisitive, her mother has found her an apprenticeship with her aunt Dorcas Lane in Candleford. She has a lot of fun working at the post office, but she seems to have underestimated the transition from farm to small town life.
- Dorcas Lane
- At a young age she helped out a lot with her father and after his death took over the management of the post office and the forge. She has been a respected and popular member of Candleford ever since, and the squire Sir Timothy, with whom she has been friends since childhood, also values her opinion.
- Sir Timothy Midwinter
- The landlord, Sir Timothy, is the main landowner in the region and is also a justice of the peace, and is respected by everyone for his calm, determined and just manner. He is newly married to the beautiful Lady Adelaide.
- Lady Adelaide Midwinter
- Lady Adelaide comes from a well-to-do family, but did not gain social advancement until she married Sir Timothy. Up until now she was used to going to lots of parties and balls, but now she lives in the country and has to look for new tasks.
- Pearl Pratt
- Pearl, as the elder of the Pratt sisters, took on responsibility very early after the death of her mother and so they moved to Candleford to set up a women's clothing store there. She attaches great importance to elegant goods and elegant customers.
- Ruby Pratt
- Ruby, the younger of the Pratt sisters, supports Pearl in every way, both when selling in "stores" and in striving to be as special as possible.
- Thomas Brown
- Thomas is Dorca's postman. As a devout Christian, abstainer and non-smoker, he wants to set a good example and lead his neighbors on the right path.
- Zillah
- Zilla is Dorca's housekeeper and already worked there for her grandfather. She is a loyal soul, but doesn’t mince her words and always knows how to report every news.
- Matthew Welby
- Matthew works in Dorca's forge. He has a very calm, contemplative manner, which especially benefits the horses, so that even nervous animals can be shod by him.
- Philip Weiss
- Since his father is also a gamekeeper, he would like to take up this profession himself and works on Sir Timothy's estate as a gamekeeper assistant. When he met Laura, he tried to get her excited about this art.
In Lark Rise
- Robert Timmins
- Robert, Laura's father, is originally from Oxford. As a trained stonemason, he moved here to restore local churches, where he met Emma, settled with her on the edge of Lark Rise in the End House and is now an ordinary worker. Politically, he is very free-thinking and does not always hold back his views to the great concern of his wife.
- Emma Timmins
- Emma is Robert's wife and mother of five children: Laura, Edmund, Ethel, Frank and Baby Annie. She wants her oldest daughter, who is very smart, to make something of her life and can send her to Candleford for training at the post office of her cousin Dorcas Lane.
- Caroline Arless
- Caroline is a neighbor of the Timmins. With her husband Walter on the high seas, there is very little money left for her and the four children. In spite of everything, she is cheerful and carefree and always finds ways and means to raise money to spend it with pleasure again.
- Alf Arless
- Alf is Caroline's oldest son and has been close friends with Laura from childhood. He left school early in order to earn money in the fields and thus contribute something to the family. He tries in vain to induce his mother to be thrifty.
- Queenie Turrill
- Queenie lives with her husband Twister next to the End House. As one of the oldest residents, she preserves the rural traditions and wisdom. She also keeps bees and knows how to use honey for useful and digestible purposes.
- Twister Turrill
- Old Twister, Queenie's husband, is not particularly bright in the head and a bit forgetful. You can usually find him in the “Wagon and Horses”, where he likes to tell old anecdotes and jokes.
- Paxton
- Mr. Paxton is the host of the "Wagon and Horses", the pub in Lark Rise, thus its center point.
- Edmund Timmins
- Edmund is three years younger than Laura. He still goes to school, but he doesn't think his mother will support his career aspiration because he wants to be a soldier.

production
The interior was shot in a warehouse on the Beeches Industrial Estate , in Yate , South Gloucestershire . The exterior shots of the villages of Lark Rise and Candleford were filmed on farms in Box and Neston Park , near Corsham , Wiltshire . According to the BBC, Hatt Farm in Box was used for its proximity to existing cornfields and buildings, and Park Farm in Neston Park was selected for its unspoilt character and attractive traditional buildings. The field shots at these locations for the first season lasted 25 days, spread over a period of 5 months. All of the rural scenes , including the comings and goings of the squires, were filmed at Chavenage House in Gloucestershire.
