Acclaimed cellist Matilda Gray is preparing for a world tour when her mother Janice unexpectedly commits suicide. While Matilda is sorting through the dead people's belongings, she comes across a box containing newspaper clippings and a video cassette. These are about the disappearance of four-year-old girl Carys Howells in the small Welsh town of Penllynith in 1994. Matilda decides to go to town with her best friend and colleague Hal to find out what connection her mother had to the case. When they arrive there, the wealthy Ewan Dean is being buried. He broke mirrors and examined a trapdoor in his estate, the Dean House, whereupon he took his own life. Cary's mother, Rose, is at the funeral, and when the residents notice Matilda and Hal's presence, they are very upset. They stay with Nick, Ewan's Australian great-nephew and heir, who lets them stay at Dean House. When Matilda looks around the house and inspects the trapdoor, she suddenly suspects that she is Carys herself.

In a flashback, Janice explains to young Matilda that she was the result of a one-night stand and that she never met her father. At present, Constable PC Graves is investigating Ewan's deaths and pays no heed to Matildas and Hals' independent investigations. The residents continue to treat them both cold-heartedly, except for the antique dealer Sylvia Walsh, who is friendly to them and welcomes Matilda back to her amazement. Meanwhile, Graves continues investigating and interrogates, among others, Stephen Kendrick, who was the lead investigator in the Carys case at the time, and Ed Fenton, a somewhat shady craftsman who allegedly witnessed Ewan's death. Meanwhile, Matilda observes the boy David, whom she takes to be her half-brother, and notices similarities between them, which annoys his father Aron. Shortly afterwards, strange things happen in the village, among other things sheep are gutted, Matilda also finds a book about the language of angels. At the end of the episode, Sean Howell, Carys' father, gives her half of a friendship necklace that belonged to his daughter because he thinks he recognizes Carys in Matilda.

After Matilda went to the police with the necklace, she was warned by Graves not to stir up the atmosphere any further. Meanwhile, Stephen claims that Sean, who went into hiding in the years after Cary's disappearance, had nothing to do with the case. When Matilda asks if Rose is responsible for Carys' disappearance, Stephen defends her and withdraws. A little later, Matilda meets Rose, which both emotionally touches and, much to Aron's displeasure, leaves Rose upset. He then phones Ed, whom he bribed to lie to Graves about Ewan's death. Meanwhile, the bartender Trudy Franken, Cary's childhood best friend, leads Matilda to the house where Carys and her family used to live. When Rose learns that her husband Aron has stolen their son David, she wants to kill herself, but Matilda and Hal prevent this. Matilda then receives a copy of her birth certificate from a friend of her mother's, whereupon she smashes her cello and bursts into tears.

On the occasion of Carys' disappearance, investigators question Sean, who is acting very strangely and is very afraid of the one-way mirror in the interrogation room . Graves also finds out that Ed called Aron several times after he found Ewan's body. Meanwhile, Matilda is about to visit Rose when she meets Laura, an inmate at the local mental hospital. She claims to have visions of Carys. Meanwhile, it turns out that Harry, Trudy's husband, is likely to have something to do with the missing person case. Aron attacks Hal because he blames him and Matilda for his wife's suicide attempt. Matilda black out and comes to in the forest by running to a cave. She meets Sean, who explains to her that angels with links to mirrors have taken possession of her and want to lead her to the cave. The two enter the cave together, where Matilda has a vision. She loses consciousness again and wakes up somewhere else in the forest. She went to the basement of the Dean House and peeled off the wallpaper, finding signs that indicate that she was drugged and imprisoned in the basement, after which her hands were suddenly smeared with blood.

Meanwhile, strange symbols are appearing, including on Matilda's back. She visits a local hippie camp, where a local tells her that the police found a child's body in the forest in 1998 and then denied its existence. Because of this, Matilda comes to the conclusion that, besides Carys, another child was held captive in the Dean House. Hal is about to drive back to Matilda when he is in a car accident. Meanwhile, Sylvia and the couple Lloyd and Verity Satlow kidnap David and drug him in order to summon angels.

Hal goes missing when Matilda finds out that Nick stole her cell phone to keep her out of contact with Hal, she gets angry and pressures him. He admits that Sylvia and the Satlows gave him money to shadow them. Meanwhile, Graves is investigating a drug ring of which Stephen was a member and goes to the Satlows for answers. When she sees Matilda, who acts aggressively, she arrests her and then sends her away. Stephen lures Matilda into the Dean House with the promise to release David and tell her the truth about her origins. There Sylvia explains that Matilda is indeed Carys and David, her half-brother. Together with her other sect members Ewan Dean, the Satlows and Stephen, she wanted to achieve that an archangel who had been summoned by a ritual would take possession of a kidnapped child and thus become part of her world. The first boy died of a narcotic drug overdose, so they wanted to kidnap Carys. Janice, a policewoman at the time, found out about this plan and mistakenly thought that Rose was also a member of the sect. Because of this, she kidnapped Carys, moved with her to another city, assumed the identity of a dead person and gave Carys the name Matilda. Sylvia manipulates Matilda, who then climbs into a tunnel that she had previously seen in her dreams. When she arrives in a room, the archangel takes possession of her, the sect members panic because of his power. When the police later arrive at the Dean House, Graves finds only Matilda and David, who take them to the hospital. At the hospital, Matilda receives a visit from her birth parents, Rose and Sean, who are extremely happy to see her. When Graves asks Matilda what happened to the cult members, Matilda says she needs to go to the bathroom. There her eyes turn black while several graves are shown, then Matilda sees her reflection in the mirror and smiles. At the end of the episode, Hal is found, it is implied that he is a werewolf because he sits naked on a meadow on a full moon night and devours sheep smeared with blood.
