action

Fifteen-year-old American Daisy is sent to war-threatened England by her father to spend the summer in the country with her aunt Penn and their children Eddie, Isaac and little Piper. At first she remains closed and reacts unwillingly to the attempts of the other children to get closer to her. It was only when Penn went to Geneva to attend a conference aimed at preventing the war that she opened up a little. When the children were swimming in the afternoon, an atom bomb exploded in London and war broke out.

The children left on their own find their way around the new situation after initial difficulties. Daisy is given the opportunity to be evacuated through the US consulate in Edinburgh , but does not take advantage of this because she has fallen in love with Eddie, who reciprocates her feelings.

One day they are picked up by soldiers who separate the group. The two boys come to Gatesfield, Daisy and Piper are placed with a couple whose son is serving in the war. There they have to do field work every day together with other women. Daisy forges an escape plan, including stealing groceries, a map and a gun. She and Eddie promised each other when they split up that they would meet again at home.

When the place where they are housed is attacked one night, Daisy and Piper flee. The two make their way through the wilderness, avoiding marauders and escaping two men who captured Piper by Daisy shooting one and wounding the other. By chance they come to the meanwhile deserted Gatesfield, where Daisy discovers Isaac's corpses in a makeshift barracks.

When the girls get home, they find the house empty and devastated. They clean it up and wait for Eddie, whom Daisy finds one day seriously injured in the woods near the house. She cares for his wounds, but he is severely traumatized, no longer speaks and shows no emotions. But Daisy doesn't give up hope that he will get well again.
