action

The polishing Fred Krüppers wants his beloved Mara make a marriage proposal. He's considering the right moment at a basketball game for the Alba Berlin club , which they visit together. Before Mara agrees to the proposal, her spoiled son Linus should first take Fred into his heart. But he doesn't even think about it. Instead, he would like Fred to hand him a hand-signed basketball by the star basketball player Mercurio Müller for his birthday. Since this ball is always thrown into the disabled stands after the game, this is anything but easy for Fred. During a bowling game, he got the idea of sneaking into the stands as a disabled fan. With the help of his work colleague Alex - disguised as his supervisor - they attend a game. Fred plays a speech and walking disabled person in a wheelchair who can neither speak nor walk. But Ronnie is already waiting on stage, who has decided to catch this ball today. But Fred outsmarts the handicapped Ronnie and catches the ball himself. Fate doesn’t seem to mean that well with him, because after the game it turns out that the signature and authenticity of the ball take another week and an image film about Alba Berlin is also planned, in which Fred is to play. In his role as a disabled person, Alex quickly gave him the name Fred Krüppelmann.

For the next seven days, Fred was forced to play the “handicapped” who can neither walk nor speak. Everything goes haywire on the construction site, and to make matters worse, Denise, who is responsible for the film, is also an attractive young woman whom Fred quickly took into her heart. Because Alex cannot prove that he is a trained nurse, Fred comes to Frau Hildegard's home for a while, where he meets Ronnie again. He quickly finds out that Fred is only faking his disability and blackmailed him with it: For not betraying him, Fred should bring him into the film and thus enable a meeting with his idol Mercurio Müller.

In the course of filming, Denise and Fred get closer and closer until they fall in love. Fred is plagued by doubts as to whether he is doing the right thing, and above all whether it is the right thing to marry Mara, who puts her spoiled son's wish above her relationship with Fred. Since Benno Held, a former professional basketball player and head of the sports marketing agency Service Direkt , who commissioned the film, made major changes to the film and removed Ronnie's desired scenes, Ronnie believes that the agreement with Fred has been broken. So he betrays Fred to Benno Held. But Held does not think of publishing the revelation, as the club cannot use a scandal, and demands that Fred continue to play the handicapped and that the handover of the ball be filmed with him. In this case, however, Fred decides for the truth and confesses in front of the camera in the basketball stadium that his handicap was only invented and that he only faked it in order to get the ball. At the same time, he also confesses his love to Denise. Before that, however, she had overheard a conversation between Fred and Benno Held and left the stadium full of disappointment before she could witness Fred's confession. Ronnie follows her, and Denise finally finds out that Fred loves her, and they both get together.

background

The idea behind Where's Fred? comes from a joint script by US film writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. The two filmmakers had originally intended to direct the script themselves for the domestic cinema market, but failed early because of the financing of the project. The material later fell into the hands of the German producer Matthias Ehmke, who offered the script to the Munich producer Philip Voges . In 2003, he secured the German rights to the script with his production company Hofmann & Voges. Neue Bioskop Germany later came on board as a further producer. Senator Film Produktion and SevenPictures acted as co-producers , with ProSieben participating . Financial support was provided by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg , the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern and the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA).

Til Schweiger and Alexandra Maria Lara were in Where is Fred? the first time together in front of the camera.

Anno Saul was hired to direct , who Voges noticed primarily through his comedy Kebab Connection (2005). Saul named the "wonderfully incorrect and insanely funny stuff" as an attraction of his engagement. The cast resulted primarily from Voges' earlier projects and casting phases, which were led by Emrah Ertem. Jürgen Vogel had already worked with Voges on the feature film Buddies in 1996 . Alexandra Maria Lara and Christoph Maria Herbst , however, joined the project through Ertem, who had already been able to cast the autumn for Hui Buh - Das Schlossgespenst (2006). Anja Kling had previously stood in front of the camera with Schweiger in Michael Herbig's satire (T) Raumschiff Surprise - Period 1 (2004); her older sister Gerit Kling was also cast as her sister in the film. Former No Angels singer Vanessa Petruo and comedian Kurt Krömer appeared in Where's Fred? again made her cinema debut. Til Schweiger and Fahri Ogün Yardım only met while filming. A number of disabled extras and professional supporting actors also worked on the film, including Marienhof actor Erwin Aljukic .

After a year of revision by the author Bora Drachtkin , filming could begin in autumn 2005. These took place from September 2nd to October 24th 2005 mainly in Berlin and the surrounding area. Filming locations included the Max-Schmeling-Halle , the Velodrom , the Johannesstift , the Schöneberg Town Hall and the Sacrow Palace as well as the Großbeerenstraße in the Kreuzberg district . The stadium scenes were created as a mix of real game images that Saul recorded with a total of four camera units on a match day, re-shot set recordings with extras and with the help of digital post- production . Further scenes were implemented with the help of stunt people .

reception

Reviews

"Anno Saul's new comedy 'Where's Fred?' occasionally comes up with tear-inducing comedy. Mostly, however, she relies on cheap and well-known gags. […] The cast is just as uninspiring as the story: Schweiger as a simple heartbreaker, Lara as the gentle doe eye and Vogel in the role of the spokesman has been seen all too often. And so that nobody thinks that people are laughing at the expense of the disabled, model disabled people like 'Marienhof' actor Erwin Aljukic are part of the party. The German comedy shows itself with 'Wo ist Fred?' once again from their simple side. "

- Leni Höllerer, Berliner Zeitung

Where's Fred? is populist assembly line food, designed on the drawing board according to an emotionlessly calculated recipe; The main ingredients are German cinema 'favorites', a very talented director who has earned merits with amusing and charming comedies, and finally the bought-in script by American film writers who succeeded with an 'exemplary' subject like Santa Clause 2 , but in their own Country still found no money for their recent history. "

- Horst Peter Koll - film service

"Bland confusion and role-swapping clothes based on an outrageous script, which is less likely to let off steam on the back of disabled people than to create irritating role clichés and portray women either as calculating, as sex objects or as gullible-stupid sheep."
