In the year 2166, the immortal vandal Savage plunges the world into chaos with his army in his pursuit of world domination and induces the Time Master Rip Hunter to travel with his ship Waverider to the year 2016 - contrary to the command of the Council of Time Masters Not to change the past - to avert Savage's future deeds. It turns out that Boardman is Kendra's and Carter's son from a previous life, and in the absence of the team, the Waverider with Jackson on board is shot at by time-traveling bounty hunter Chronos . Through the emotional connection to Jackson, Dr. Stein the danger and the team rush back before they have to flee on the ship with the boardman, who was fatally wounded by Chronos. Under pressure from the crew, Rip finally reveals that the council has set Chronos on him because of his rule violation and that he wants revenge on Savage for the murder of his son and wife. He also admits that he selected the team members because of their irrelevance over time, which weakens their trust in him, but also encourages them to determine their own fate. Meanwhile, Savage is acquiring nuclear missiles in Norway.

With the help of Boardman's notes, the team found Savage at an illegal weapons auction in Norway, where he wanted to auction his newly captured warhead. Without Rip, who is struggling for authority, the team sneaks in, but is exposed and has to defend itself in the upcoming fight against the terrorists present. Savage creates a distraction to escape unnoticed by activating a time fuse on the atomic bomb, which Firestorm then takes to a distant place, where it can keep the explosion energy low thanks to its absorption power. Back on board the ship, it turns out that Savage has picked up a lost component of the weapon system from Ray's suit and, according to a simulation of the on-board computer, will use it to bring destruction to the world as early as 2016. Since Dr. Stein knows that an alpha-ray detector would be able to track down the part, and in 1975 he was one of the few people who owned a prototype, so he set off with Jackson and Sara to find out who he was. In an attempt to weaken Savage by attacking his fortune, Rip and Sara are exposed in the bank by staff belonging to Savage's entourage and are involved in a fight in which Sara kills most of the employees through her uncontrollable lust for murder. They question one of them on board, who reveals that Rip had already committed a failed assassination attempt on Savage in the Middle Kingdom and that the latter plans to use Carter's body at a gala that evening. Meanwhile, Jackson Snart and Rory fly to Central City on the Waverider Jumpship , where the two steal an emerald, which Snart then gives to his father. His hope is to prevent him from the same robbery that earned him a long prison sentence, as a result of which he became violent against his family. Arrived in 1986, the team embarks on a mission to the Pentagon to steal a strictly secured file on Savage from there, which succeeds even when Kendra is overpowered by the forces from her first life as an ancient Egyptian battle priestess and attacks several guards. Upon arriving at a gulag , Ray and Rory are locked in a cell while Dr. Stein von Vostok has been asked in vain to disclose the formula it needs to stabilize the Firestorm reaction. Via a radio message to the Waverider, in which their leader, Jon Valor, demands the surrender of the same, Rip activates a protocol in the on-board computer by pronouncing signal words, which allows the Waverider to flee, although its shell is caused by the Acheron being shot at damaged. While Snart and Sara are locked up by a security mechanism and threaten to freeze while trying to seal the crack, Rip is desperate to insult Rory, who is already frustrated because he would have preferred to stay in Star City 2046 in the holding cell , but was dragged onto the ship by Snart, and now decides to collaborate with Valor. Meanwhile, Ray succeeds in repairing the hull of the ship from the outside, but on return on board suffers a cardiac arrest due to lack of oxygen, which he survives thanks to Kendra's life-saving measures. The updated timeline takes the team back to 1958 in Harmony Falls, a small town in Oregon that is currently suffering from a series of murders and the mysterious disappearance of three teenagers. In order to find out more about this, the crew members mingle with the people in various roles, so Ray and Kendra move into a house as a supposed married couple and get to know their new neighbor, Savage, who works here as the head of a special wing of the mental hospital is and thinks Kendra doesn't recognize him. In his shrunken suit, Ray sneaks into Savage's house the next day and loots a dagger, which Rip identifies as the one who could kill Savage forever. The next leap in time transports the team to Dakota territory in 1871, which lies in a “time fragment” in which the ship is difficult to locate for time masters. Since everyone except Rip is curious to get to know the Wild West , they dress up to date and go to a saloon, where Snart protects Dr. Stein shoots a contentious card player and starts a brawl. The group is then approached on the street by the cowboy Jonah Hex , who identifies them as a time traveler and knows Rip from a previous encounter. On board the Waverider, Hex tells that the man who was shot by Snart was a member of Jeb Stillwater's gang that has been terrorizing the city for months. In contrast to Rip, who wants to keep a low profile as possible, the rest of the crew strives to help the citizens, so that Ray dares to stand in the way of the Stillwater gang on their next appearance. With the support of Snart as a sniper, Ray succeeds in driving the gang away, for which he receives the applause of the residents, but also the concern of Hex, who remembers Rip's last stay, when he was part of a town threatened by bandits left to its sudden departure to destruction. Thanks to the time signatures the pilgrim leaves as she travels through time, the team can track them down and keep them from murdering the younger selves of Rory in 1990, Sara in 2007, and Ray in 2014. In order to be one step ahead of the pilgrim from now on, however, Rip decides to kidnap the remaining team members as newborns and thus temporarily remove them from the course of time, which they manage with Snart, Stein and Jackson. After Rip takes the infants to a secret haven where his adoptive mother raises children to time masters, the crew on the ship receives a message from the pilgrim who has since taken members of the crew, including Jackson's father, hostage. Instead of the required infants, Rip offers the pilgrim his own younger self, which she can be persuaded to do because all of his actions, such as putting together the team, can be averted from the outset by eliminating it. At the agreed meeting point, to which Rip's adoptive mother brings his younger self with her from the place of refuge, a surprise attack by the team is stopped by the pilgrim who uses her time manipulation powers to freeze the individual attackers in time. Since she disregards the young Rip, however, he can ram a knife into her stomach, which means that the pilgrim can no longer maintain her rigidity and dies in the bundled attacks of the team. The team landed in London in 2166, shortly before Rip's family was murdered, and discovered during a public speech by Savage that the commander of Savage's bodyguard was wearing Kendra's bracelet from her first life in ancient Egypt, which thus served as an object with which Savage can be killed. The crew teams up with a nearby rebel camp and manages to kidnap the troop commander, who reveals herself to be Savage's daughter, Cassandra, on the Waverider. While Kendra melts the bracelet and covers a mace with it, Cassandra defends her father's deeds as a necessity to bring order to the world devastated by Per Degaton by the deadly Armageddon virus during interrogation with Snart. When Savage's secret weapon "Leviathan", a giant robot, approaches the rebel camp shortly afterwards, Dr. Stein and Ray spontaneously take refuge on the ship for the refugees, which saves them from certain death. When the team discovers that Savage himself traveled to the future to obtain the technology for his Leviathan robot, Rip sees it as a time crime and therefore a reason to show Savage to the Council of Time Masters. However, the long journey to the “Vanishing Point”, the seat of the council, falls victim to the time drive, during the repair of which Jackson is contaminated with time radiation, which sets in motion an extremely increased aging process. Snart and Rory accuse Rip of selfishness not doing the dangerous repair themselves, and turn away from him on charges of carelessly jeopardizing the lives of the crew members. In the captivity of the Time Masters, Rip learns from Zaman Druce the reason for supporting Savage, namely an upcoming invasion of the Thanagarans, an extraterrestrial people in 2175, which can only be repulsed thanks to Savage. Druce Rip also gives a glimpse into the chamber of the Oculus, a device the Council used to manipulate time and used to protect Savage from unwanted obstacles on past missions. Since Rip's crew played a crucial role in this, the council had to give Rip a motivation to found the team and therefore ordered the murder of his family. Sara, who was hiding on the ship with Snart and was not discovered, steers the Waverider out of the hangar and shoots the vanishing point from the outside, so that Snart can calmly Rip, Ray and Dr. Can free stone. Rory, meanwhile, has been brainwashed but has only faked its success and joins the rest of the team who, back on board the Waverider, decide to destroy the Oculus to get out of the council's control. When they go to the source of the Oculus and are surrounded by soldiers of the council, Jackson, who has returned from 2016, unexpectedly comes to their aid and takes down all opponents with his jumpship. Ready to destroy the Oculus, while sabotaging it, Ray stumbles upon a safety switch that he has to hold down to detonate it. After being held back by Rory, who wants to sacrifice himself, he is in turn ousted by Snart, who ultimately remains the only one of the team to destroy the Oculus and with it the entire Vanishing Point. In addition to Snart's and Druce's death, this means that the team can no longer specifically travel through time, just like Savage, who has committed the murder of Rip's wife and son with Kendra on board a time ship in the meantime.

Since the on-board computer can no longer track Savage, Rip declares the mission over and deposes the team in 2016, but returns at his protest and takes them back on board. During an attempt to escape, Kendra recognizes a soldier's helmet from the Waverider in the midst of the Battle of Saint-Lô in 1944 and gives him a slip of paper with its location, which leads to its repositioning on the Waverider and attracts the attention of the crew. So the team finds Savages time ship, but in the fight with German soldiers and Savage's henchmen they only manage to free Carter, while Savage escapes with Kendra and his target, an Nth meteorite transported by the Nazis. When Carter tells of Savage's plan to return time to ancient Egypt and rule over it, Dr. Stein that he had to blow up the three Thanagarian meteorites in 1958 in Harmony Falls, 1975 in Norway and 2021 in St. Roch. The team splits up so that they can stop Savage in each of the three years, and after Kendra takes his immortality away with his dagger, they can also kill him. Ray was able to shrink the meteorites already charged by Savage in 1958 and liquefy Firestorm in 1975 with the help of his meta-force, but in 2021 Rip sees the only way to prevent an explosion by flying the meteorite into the sun with the Waverider. Shortly before the impact, Rip notices the excessive energy available to the time drive due to solar radiation and throws the meteorite off in order to escape the gravitational pull of the sun. Together with the team, Rip returns to 2016 and decides to be on the road as the protector of time from now on, with everyone from the crew joining him except for Kendra and Carter. Before they board the ship, another Waverider crash-lands in front of them, from which they meet a man named Rex Tyler, who warns them not to take off with the Waverider.
