history

The exact time when the Church of the Protection of the Virgin was built is unclear. It was first mentioned in a chronicle in 1399. A monastery of the Protection of the Virgin was reported for the first time in 1544.

In 1581 the Polish King Stephan Bathory besieged the city of Pskow. Through a hole in the city wall near the church, it was possible to bring the miraculous icon of the Mercy of Mercy (Умиление) and the bones of St. Vsevolod Gabriel from the neighboring Mirosh monastery to the city. With their help - the citizens of Pskov are convinced - the assault on the city on September 8, 1581, the day of the feast of the birth of the Virgin Mary , could be repulsed. On September 8, 1582, the anniversary of the Victory, in honor of the city's protector, the extension of the Church of the Birth of the Virgin to the Church of the Protection of the Virgin began.

In 1764 the Maria Schutz monastery was closed by order of Tsarina Catherine II . In 1847 and 1848 renovations took place, during which the wooden bell tower was replaced by a stone one.

In 1936 both churches were closed. They were badly damaged during the German occupation from 1941 to 1944. From 1961 to 1964 the churches were extensively restored. In 1966 Andrei Tarkovsky shot a scene from the film Andrei Rublev in the churchyard.

In 1993 the buildings were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, and there has been a priest again since 2006.
