Asterix and the Vikings is the eighth Asterix cartoon from 2006, based on Asterix and the Normans , first published in 1966 . In addition to the German dubbed version, there was also a Swiss-German version that was shown in Swiss cinemas.

action

The small Gallic village receives a visit from Grautvornix, the chief's nephew. Asterix and Obelix are supposed to make a whole man out of the youth who grew up in Lutetia . This is how they begin his training. They have to find out that Grautvornix is a weakling and quite a coward. For his part, Grautvornix feels uncomfortable in the village, because he finds the circumstances there provincial.

In the far north, however, live the Vikings . These intrepid people fear nothing and nobody and are frustrated because when they are looted, all the inhabitants of the villages flee beforehand. The seer cryptographer tells the chief of the Vikings that fear is supposed to give wings and that is why the inhabitants of the villages have all disappeared. The chief wants to be able to fly too, so he asks the cryptographer to find the fear champion. In his distress, the cryptographer points to the map and, of all places, to the Gauls' village. The chief now decides to visit the Gauls to learn from them what fear is. Abba, the rebellious daughter of the Viking chief, also wants to go on the trip, but her father forbids it. Abba, however, smuggles himself onto the ship disguised as a man, but is discovered at sea. When the Vikings dock in Gaul, the cryptographer's son discovers Grautvornix of all people, who is actually on his way back to Lutetia, and considers him the fear champion. He brings him on the Viking ship and the Vikings start their journey home. The disappearance of Grautvornix does not go unnoticed by the Gauls and so the Gallic chief Majestix sends Asterix and Obelix to search for his nephew.

On the Viking ship, Abba meets Grautvornix and falls in love with him. Back home, the Vikings celebrate a lively party in honor of the champion. Grautvornix also develops a greater liking for Abba when Asterix and Obelix suddenly appear and want to take him away. But Grautvornix does not want to be rescued and tells them that his time in their village was a nightmare. Obelix leaves the party injured, Asterix rushes after him. Although Grautvornix shows a guilty conscience, Abba brings him back. Back at home, they witness how the cryptographer demands from Maulaf that Olaf is allowed to marry Abba as a reward for finding and capturing the champion. Outraged, she wants to disappear with Grautvornix, but they are stopped and separated. The next morning, the "champion" gets into trouble because he is supposed to fly something. If he can't, there will be no wedding. So the cryptographer uses a moment in which he distracts the others to tie a rope around Grautvornix's waist that hangs on a rod from Olaf: Apparently he can fly after all. While all Vikings are on their way to the wedding, the cryptographer Grautvornix wants to get rid of the rope that holds him, but can only scratch. Before Grautvornix crashes, Asterix and Obelix catch him. Overjoyed, he apologizes to them.

On the boat with which the three want to start their journey home, however, there is a dispute between Asterix and Obelix as to whether or not they should take Abba with them. Grautvornix uses this to steal the bottle of magic potion from Asterix and take a sip of it. He then goes to the wedding between Abba and Olaf, which he - strengthened by the magic potion - can prevent. However, Olaf takes up the chase. After a long chase, Grautvornix is finally caught. In the meantime, however, the magic potion has worn off. Fortunately, Asterix and Obelix come to the rescue to stop the other pursuers. However, when Abba suggests that Grautvornix should fly away with her, he has to admit that he cannot. Angry, she runs away while Olaf is sunk under ice floes. But he reappears, determined to kill his rival. Fortunately, SMSix, Grautvornix 'Taube, Asterix and Obelix gets on his track in time.

At the last moment Abba can stop Olaf from killing Grautvornix. Olaf stumbles onto a geyser from which a column of hot steam hurls him into the air. When he falls down again, all the Vikings arrive. The stupid Olaf unconsciously reveals that Grautvornix 'flight was just a trick by him and his father. The angry Maulaf then wants to plunge the cryptographer into a ravine, but the cryptographer clings to Abba's cloak and pulls her with him, as does Grautvornix, who wants to save Abba. The fate of the two lovers seems to be sealed until Grautvornix unpacks a flying device, a hang-glider, and both escape death at the last moment. The Gauls then return to Aremorica with the Vikings to celebrate the marriage of Grautvornix and Abba in their village. Grautvornix and his father are also reconciled, who apparently had a difficult relationship due to differing views on how to be a whole man.

At this celebration, Troubadix, the bard of the village, is encouraged by the chief of the Vikings to sing a song. However, the bard's singing skills are so terrible that the Vikings learned for the first time what fear is and fled headlong to their ship and made off.

Reviews

Cinema said: “The 22 million euro cartoon is solidly animated and peppered with a few nice ideas. So the story of 1967 is spiced up with modern aspects such as 'SMS dove' and girl power. Old and new also complement each other visually: Snowfall, water and fog come from the computer, but figures and landscapes do not deny their origins from traditional comics. "

Blickpunkt: Film wrote: “The eighth animated adventure spins a harmless, sympathetic story in which the most important standards of the Gaulish saga are incorporated. Even if the characters and story could be imagined as cheeky and original, the retro charm of the comics is taken into account. "

The lexicon of international films said: “The cartoon combines the classic comic book of the same name from 1967 with some adaptations to the changed circumstances, but does not shy away from ingratiating on the supposed target audience. In addition, the graphically passable film lacks puns and brilliant ideas. "
