An untamed life (Original title: An Unfinished Life ) is an American drama film directed by Lasse Hallström from 2005 . The main roles were played by Robert Redford , Jennifer Lopez and Morgan Freeman .

Einar Gilkyson lives on his farm in Ishawooa, Wyoming . He takes care of his longtime friend Mitch Bradley, who is suffering from the effects of injuries after fighting a bear . Einar couldn't help Mitch in the accident at the time because he was very drunk. He therefore makes great reproaches. The bear later reappears near the farm and is soon caught by rangers and given to a local zoo .

Shortly after the bear was caught, Jean Gilkyson appears, who was married to Einar's only son. He died in a car accident when both of them wanted to drive home from a party, exhausted. Jean was behind the wheel at the time and is therefore blamed by Einar for the death of his son. He is very dismissive towards her, but at the same time surprised that she has a little daughter named Griff with her. At the time of the funeral, she was already pregnant, but Einar withheld her circumstances. After that, the contact broke off completely. She left her last partner, Gary, when he was repeatedly violent towards her.

Jean only wants to stay with Einar in Ishawooa until she has saved enough money for the onward journey. She finds work as a waitress and Griff meets her grandfather, whom she has never known before. When Einar tries to free the bear at Mitch Bradley's request, the helping handle endangers Einar's life due to a mistake in controlling the pickup . Although slightly injured, he does not hold his granddaughter amiss for the mishap. In the hospital there is a discussion between Einar and Jean and a reconciliation.

When Jean's ex-boyfriend Gary shows up on the Gilkyson farm, Gary and Jean fight, in the course of which Einar demolishes Gary's car and then puts him on the bus back to his home. Crane Curtis, the sheriff of Ishawooa, has fallen in love with Jean and started dating her.

The film was produced back in 2003 but was not released until two years later. The reason was a dispute between Lasse Hallström and the producers.

Reviews

Peter Travers praised the portrayals of Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman in Rolling Stone magazine on September 8, 2005, but criticized the horrific ( unspeakable ) dialogues and the portrayal of Jennifer Lopez.

Jürgen Armbruster wrote on www.filmstarts.de that the film would appear to be in love with itself . He praised the performance of the leading actors, the pictures and the film music.

On www.satt.org Friederike Kapp praised the very convincing representation by Damian Lewis, as well as the representations by Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman. The portrayal of Jennifer Lopez criticized her as a stereotype and a transplant from a teen strip .
