action

After fleeing Boston , Erin Tierney arrives in a coach in Southport, a small coastal town in North Carolina . At first it is unclear why she is fleeing, but the police are apparently looking for her. A montage in which she is shown with a bloody knife gives the viewer the impression that she was involved in a murder . In Southport she wants to start a new and peaceful life. She takes the name Katie. After her arrival, the strange young woman rents a small wooden house in the middle of the forest and finds a job as a waitress in a restaurant on the beach .

At first, Katie has only one goal: she doesn't want to attract attention and stay in the background. But despite the distance to the local people, Katie feels more and more drawn to the sincere warmth and affection of the close-knit community of Southport, especially Alex Wheatley, who alone raises two children, Lexie and Josh, and one in town Grocery store with gas station leads. She also gets along better and better with her neighbor Jo, who encourages Erin to approach Alex. Alex becomes aware of Erin through his daughter. Alex's wife died of cancer a few years ago. She has left letters for her children to receive on special occasions in their lives.

Gradually, Katie learns to trust again and, with the help of Alex and his children, to enjoy the joys of life. Lexie accepts her as a new mother. His son Josh, on the other hand, initially isolates himself from Erin and treats her repellent. Meanwhile, her husband writes out a nationwide manhunt for her, she is wanted as a murderer.

One day Alex notices a wanted poster with a phantom image of Erin in the local police station. He gets mad at Erin for not telling him about it and makes her leave town. A little later, Alex realizes that he should give her a chance to explain her past and her behavior. Erin tells of her difficult marriage with the police officer Kevin, who mistreated her several times until she finally fled from him. Alex accepts this and promises to protect her from her husband.

Meanwhile, Kevin's supervisor learns of the manhunt and discovers that Kevin is carrying vodka in a water bottle that he always has with him. Kevin is immediately suspended. At night he breaks into the house of his neighbor Mrs. Feldman, who had previously helped Erin escape, and listens to her answering machine , whereby he finds out Erin's whereabouts. Kevin immediately sets off for Southport.

When her ex-husband comes to town on the day of the 4th of July celebrations and searches for her, Erin instinctively fled. When a big festival is going on in Southport, he takes the chance and dumps gasoline around the house where Alex lives. Erin is able to stop her ex-husband from setting fire to it, but a spark from a missile hits the house and sets it on fire. Alex is barely able to save Lexie from the sea of flames when he sees Kevin fighting Katie on the ground with his gun in hand. Erin can shoot Kevin. From now on, Erin and Alex can lead a happy life with the children in the cozy little town. The burned down house will be rebuilt together with residents from the small town.

In the final scene, Alex hands Erin a letter that his wife wrote for "her" - the future new wife in Alex's life - before she died. In the enclosed photo, Erin recognizes that Alex's late wife is her friend Jo. She watched over Alex and Erin until Alex gave her the letter. Now she can leave, knowing that her family is in good hands.

Reviews

Safe Haven - Like a Light in the Night begins as a thriller, but quickly turns out to be a very ordinary Nicholas Sparks film, which is as expected as it is kitschy. The lovers in the center are once again too perfect to be true and therefore perfectly fitting with Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. "

- Patrick Heidmann, CountryMusicNews.de

Safe Haven follows the tried and tested recipe with which Nicholas Sparks has established himself as an experienced master of romantic bestsellers. His characters often have a few decorative cracks in their soul suits and have traumatic experiences in the relationship market behind them, which they try to overcome with a new, amorous show of strength. "

- Martin Schwickert, ZEIT ONLINE

“Even if [the] story […] is a bit out of the ordinary and is enriched with crime and thriller elements, the plot and staging reliably offer what Sparks fans should expect: romance without great detours, beautiful people and simply knitted people Conflicts. […] The chemistry between the main actors is right, and Julianne Hough in particular […] is convincing. [...] Only the final turn towards the fantastic, which only takes place in the last few minutes of the film, does not work at all and seems like an attempt to squeeze a bit more emotion out of an already emotional ending - superfluous. But definitely worth a look for romantics. "
