Benjamin John "Ben" Howard (born April 24, 1987 in London ) is an English singer-songwriter .

biography

Howard was influenced by his parents' record collection, which included artists from the 1960s and 1970s such as Bob Dylan , Van Morrison , Richie Havens and Joni Mitchell . His mother played the guitar and flute and took part in open mic nights at the Dartingtons College of Music. His father, an interior designer, played the guitar every now and then.

Ben Howard studied at the Torquay Boys' Grammar School . He then studied journalism. However, he broke off six months before completing his studies in order to devote himself to his artistic career.

Howard initially performed on a smaller scale in Great Britain and when his concerts were sold out months in advance, he was offered a recording contract through the Island Records label . Convinced of the history of the label, which had artists like Nick Drake and John Martyn under contract, Howard signed.

In 2011 the singles Old Pine , The Wolves and Keep Your Head Up were released , the latter of which hit the UK single charts . His first album Every Kingdom was released on October 3, 2011 . Howard went on a tour through Europe and the USA from August 2011. On October 31, 2012, Ben Howard released The Burgh Island EP with the single Esmerelda .

Howard played at numerous major international festivals such as T In The Park and South by Southwest in 2012 . Deutschlandradio Wissen broadcast a recording of the concert at the Antigel Festival in Geneva on September 7, 2012.

He is regularly accompanied on stage by India Bourne (guitar, cello, keyboard, ukulele, bass, percussion, backing vocals) and Chris Bond (guitar, bass, drums, percussion, keyboard, accordion, backing vocals).

Since 2017 he has played alongside his former bandmates Mickey Smith, Kyle Keegan, Nat Wason, Rich Thomas and India Bourne in the indie-folk band A Blaze Of Feather, with Mickey Smith as the group's lead singer. A Blaze Of Feather is also the first band signed by his record label Hell Up Records, founded in 2017 .
