Jacoba "Cobie" Francisca Maria Smulders (born April 3, 1982 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian actress and model .

Life

Cobie Smulders is the daughter of an Englishwoman and a Dutchwoman . She was named after her Dutch great aunt Jacoba, after whom she was nicknamed "Cobie". As a child, she wanted to become a doctor or marine biologist. In high school , however, in which she played her first roles later, her interest grew in acting. As a teenager she was discovered by a modeling agency and began a modeling career that took her to France , Japan , Italy , Greece and Germany , among others . She graduated from high school with the "Most Respected Person" award in 2000, continued working as a model, and eventually settled in Los Angeles to begin her acting career.

Her first appearance was a guest role on the US broadcaster Showtime produced show Jeremiah . After that she was booked for other series, for example she had a recurring role in The L Word . Her first permanent occupation was the role of Juliet in the ABC series Veritas: The Quest , which was discontinued after only 13 episodes.

From 2005 to 2014 Smulders played one of the leading roles in the US comedy series How I Met Your Mother , where she played the Canadian television presenter Robin Scherbatsky on the side of Alyson Hannigan , Jason Segel , Neil Patrick Harris and Josh Radnor .

In 2012, she played the SHIELD agent Maria Hill in the comic book adaptation of Marvel's The Avengers . She also took on this role in several episodes of the ABC series Marvel's Agents of SHIELD and in the follow-up films The Return of the First Avenger , Avengers: Age of Ultron , Avengers: Infinity War , Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home .

In 2013, she starred in the Nicholas Sparks film adaptation of Safe Haven - How to See a Light in the Night . Since 2019 she can be seen alongside Jake Johnson in Stumptown .

Since How I Met Your Mother , Smulders' standard German dubbing voice has been from Christine Stichler .

Personal

In May 2009, Smulders and her then fiancé, actor and comedian Taran Killam , became parents to a daughter. The two were married on September 8, 2012 at a ranch resort near Solvang , California and live in Los Angeles. In early January 2015, she gave birth to the couple's second child.

In an April 2015 interview with Women's Health magazine, Smulders said that when she was 25, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer that had spread to the lymph nodes and surrounding tissues. The treatment lasted two years.

For the role of Robin Scherbatsky , Cobie Smulders recorded three songs as Robin Sparkles and Robin Daggers, which were also released as downloads. In addition, the first single was available on Just Dance 3 for Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
