action

Jack Reacher is returning to the headquarters of his former military unit in Washington, DC four years after the events of the first part . There he would like to meet with Major Susan Turner, with whom he had only been in contact by phone until then and who is now in charge of the unit. At headquarters, Reacher learns from Col. Sam Morgan that Major Turner has been charged with treason and that she is being held in Fort Dyer military prison. Major Turner had dispatched two investigators to Afghanistan to investigate incidents related to missing military equipment and the private military service company Parasource involved. Investigators were shot dead with a military weapon at close range and compromising material was found in Turner's apartment.

Jack Reacher, however, believes they are framing Turner, investigates and meets with Major Turner's public defender, Colonel Bob Moorcroft. Moorcroft explains the situation to Reacher and points out that Turner does not want to see him. The Colonel also tells him that a certain Candice Dayton has filed a paternity suit against the military and that Reacher is said to be the father of their 15-year-old daughter Samantha. Reacher then locates Samantha. They are watched by an unknown pursuer.

The following night, Moorcroft is tortured and finally killed by an unknown person. Jack Reacher is arrested on suspicion of murder by the military police after his meeting with Moorcroft was observed the day before. When transferred to the military prison, Reacher and Major Turner escape before a team from Parasource can seize Major Turners. Both of them will be hunted by both Parasource and the Military Police from this point on. On their escape, they discover that Samantha Dayton is also in Parasource's crosshairs. When Reacher and Turner arrive at Samantha's foster parents, they discover that they have already been killed and that the frightened Samantha is hiding in a closet. You take them with you.

As the trio continues to escape and investigate, Reacher and Turner are able to find a witness in New Orleans who can explain the truth behind the murder of the soldiers in Afghanistan. They suspect that Parasource sold weapons intended for repatriation to the United States to insurgents. However, when the witness is handed over to Captain Espin of the military police, they are ambushed and the witness is killed. Together, Reacher, Major Turner and Captain Espin can eliminate the attackers and go with reinforcements to the headquarters of Parasource. The weekly load of weapons to be returned from Afghanistan is arriving at their airfield. Reacher and Major Turner, accompanied by the military police, have them opened, expecting to find empty weapon cases. Contrary to their expectations, however, the boxes contain the appropriate weapons. However, Reacher takes one of the weapons and smashes the stopper on the bottom of the pipe, whereupon packages of opium fall out, with Parasource being convicted of drug smuggling . The Parasource employees and the military involved are arrested.

When Samantha, who was left behind at the hotel, is tracked down by Parasource mercenaries, she sends a cry for help to Jack Reacher. He and Turner rush to the hotel, where they defeat their opponents in the final showdown.

Major Turner, fully rehabilitated, resumes her duties as chief investigator with the military unit. Reacher and Samantha meet in a coffee shop to wait for their mother, Candice, to settle paternity. Samantha explains to Reacher that he is not her father because he and the waitress, who has poured him coffee several times, did not recognize each other. The waitress is Samantha's mother. Reacher and Samantha then go their own way, but promise to see each other again.

production

The movie Jack Reacher , released in 2012, was originally intended as a tentpole . It was to be followed by a whole series of Jack Reacher films. However, after the film had a rather disappointing theatrical release, rumors began to spread that there would be no sequels.

In December 2013, Paramount Pictures announced that a sequel to the film was now planned. The basis is again a novel by author Lee Child with the title The Hunted (original title: Never Go Back ). In May 2014 it was confirmed that Tom Cruise would take on the role of Jack Reacher again. Initially, Christopher McQuarrie , the director of the first part, was in discussion to direct again. However, since he was too busy with his project Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015), Edward Zwick was chosen instead ; McQuarrie acted as the producer.

Filming began on October 20, 2015. The film, with a budget of $ 96 million, was filmed in New Orleans , Baton Rouge and St. Francisville , Louisiana .

The music for the film was composed by Henry Jackman . Thus Jack Reacher 2 is the first film by director Edward Zwick since Blood Diamond (2006), in which James Newton Howard was not the composer.

Others

  • Lee Child made a cameo in this film , this time as a member of airport security checking Jack Reacher's papers.
