Edward Zwick (sometimes also Ed Zwick ) (born October 8, 1952 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American film producer , director and screenwriter .

Life

In 1975 Zwick met Marshall Herskovitz at the American Film Institute . They first collaborated on the television film Special Bulletin and in 1985 they founded The Bedford Falls Company, their own production company. As a result, the two developed several television formats, including the series The Best Years (1987-1991). Since then they have also worked together on several of their film projects.

Zwick is known in the industry as an “epic specialist”. Films like Glory (the story of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an all- black unit in the Civil War ) and Last Samurai , an epic from 19th century Japanese history, have given him this reputation.

As a producer, Zwick was responsible for Shakespeare in Love (1998), for which he received the Oscar as a co-producer , and for Last Samurai (2003). For the latter, he co-wrote and directed the script .

Zwick again directed and produced the drama Blood Diamond (2006), which was shot in South Africa and Mozambique . The film was nominated for five Oscars, but ultimately not awarded.
