action
Mitch Rapp proposes marriage to his girlfriend while they are on vacation in Ibiza on the beach. Shortly afterwards, she is killed in an attack by terrorists in a jihadist cell. The student of Arabic linguistics then joins the CIA as an assassin. He takes his first steps in the organization under the wing of his sponsor, former US Navy SEAL and veteran Stan Hurley. You are hired by the CIA's Deputy Director Irene Kennedy to investigate a wave of seemingly indiscriminate attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in violence, which leads them on a joint mission with a deadly Turkish agent. The task is to prevent another mysterious agent from starting World War III in the Middle East. It turns out that weapons-grade nuclear material was stolen from a decommissioned Russian nuclear facility.
When the nuclear material is sold in Poland, the plutonium is intercepted by a third party which kills the traders and disappears. Hurley learns of the news about the incident in Poland and is able to identify the perpetrator as a former Navy SEAL and Orion agent who was long believed to have passed away. This is now known by the code name "Ghost". Hurley's team is sent to Turkey to find potential buyers for the plutonium.
An operation in Istanbul fails. However, Rapp can follow the buyer to his apartment and kill him. Information from a laptop leads the team to Rome, where the agents identify a nuclear physicist who is needed to convert the plutonium into a functional nuclear weapon. In Rome, Annika is exposed as a foreign spy for Iran. During a meeting between Hurley and an Iranian contact, the contact, who is both an officer in charge and Annika's uncle, is killed and Hurley is kidnapped.
There is a fight between Ghost and Rapp on board a motor yacht, with Ghost dies. Rapp throws the nuclear weapon into the sea and escapes with the help of a US Navy helicopter. The explosion of the atomic bomb causes a tsunami, which the nearby 6th Fleet of the US Navy, which was supposed to be the target of the nuclear attack, survives.
While Hurley is recovering from his injuries, Rapp is on vacation in Dubai. On the news, he learns that the Iranian faction that has tried to get the nuclear weapon will win the presidential election. In Dubai, the parliamentary group candidate and his companions enter an elevator in which Rapp is already waiting for them.

Production history
CBS Films secured the rights to the Vince Flynn series of thriller books in 2008 . The New York Times bestseller Der Feind (Consent to Kill) was to be filmed as the first part based on a script by Jonathan Lemkin, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler planned as producers . Director Antoine Fuqua was already on board and the studio had three candidates in mind for the role of Mitch Rapp: Gerard Butler , Colin Farrell and Matthew Fox . However, since previous films by the studio did not deliver as expected, production was initially postponed. With the publication of the prehistory American Assassin - How It All Began (American Assassin) in 2010, the opportunity arose to start the filming at the beginning of Rapp's career.
In February 2012 Jeffrey Nachmanoff replaced Ed Zwick as director. At the same time, Zwick was in the process of writing the script together with Marshall Herskovtiz . The last change in director and screenwriter happened in the spring of 2016, when Michael Cuesta and Stephen Schiff took over these tasks.
The production of the film had to start before April 30, 2016 in order not to lose the rights to the estate of Vince Flynn.
Staff and cast
Chris Hemsworth received a ten million dollar offer from CBS Films in October 2012 for the lead role of Mitch Rapp, but had to decline the role a month later due to deadlines. On May 10, 2016 it was announced that the leading role would be cast with Dylan O'Brien . The producers decided to start the film with a student Mitch Rapp and hope that the actor can age along with his film role.
Bruce Willis was previously discussed for the role of mentor . The final lineup of Stan Hurley as Golden Globe winner Michael Keaton was announced on March 9, 2016. Taylor Kitsch joined the cast on August 18, 2016 and will be seen as a mysterious functionary and thus an antagonist of the film.
On September 7, 2016, it was announced that Shiva Negar and Sanaa Lathan will take on further leading roles in the film. Shiva Negar plays a Turkish agent who supports Rapp and Hurley in their mission, Sanaa Lathan plays CIA Vice Director Dr. Irene Kennedy - a role comparable to that of the M in the James Bond films. Although the character in the books is white, Lathan was hired in the auditions because of her convincing portrayal.
Filming and film music
Filming began on September 12, 2016 in London . Other locations were Rome , Valletta , Phuket and Birmingham . Filming was completed on December 19, 2016.

A first trailer was shown to the exhibitors during the Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon 2017. The first film poster and the first teaser trailer were presented to the public in April 2017.
The film opened in Germany on October 12, 2017.
criticism
"The half-baked film adaptation of the novel not only loses the red thread dramaturgically in its wild narrative, but also swirls all the motifs so unreflective that, despite the topic of international terrorism, any reflection on the political is forbidden by itself."
Gross profit
The film has received $ 67.2 million in revenue from screenings to date.
