Michael Cuesta (born July 8, 1963 in New York City , NY ) is an American film director and screenwriter . He was best known for his 2001 film LIE - Long Island Expressway .

Life

Cuesta grew up on Long Island and studied at the New York School of Visual Arts (where Bryan Singer and Jared Leto also studied ). He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . From 1992 he shot numerous commercials until he and his brother Gerard began to write the script for LIE in the late 1990s . The film was very controversial as it linked the growing up phase to difficult issues such as homosexuality , pedophilia and youth prostitution . Outside of the US, the film received consistently good reviews. This was followed by directorial work for series such as Six Feet Under and Dexter (both with Michael C. Hall ).

In 2005 Cuesta presented a new feature film with a similarly difficult topic as LIE : The End of Innocence is about a group of 12-year-old children who lose a friend to a death.

In 2011 he wrote the screenplay for Roadie with his brother , which he also directed. Ron Eldard plays a roadie here who returns home after touring with Blue Öyster Cult for twenty years . Jill Hennessy , Bobby Cannavale , Lois Smith and David Margulies appear in the supporting roles . The film was shown at the Stony Brook Film Festival, Vancouver International Film Festival and Austin Film Festival that same year.

The Showtime series Homeland , which he developed together with Howard Gordon and in which he is also involved as director and executive producer, received the Golden Globe for best dramatic television series in 2012 .

Prices

For his first work LIE - Long Island Expressway alone , Cuesta received 11 awards (including the Stockholm Film Festival ) and was nominated several times for other awards (including Fantasporto (2 ×), Gotham Awards , Sundance Film Festival ).

For the Independent Spirit Award he was not only nominated for LIE , but also for The End of Innocence , but did not receive the award in either case.
