action

15-year-old Howie Blitzer is severely traumatized by the death of his mother, who died in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. His emotional situation worsens when his father brings a new wife into the house shortly after his mother's death. So Howie seeks security in a gang that consists of Gary Terrio, a teenage prostitute, and two other peers.

Gary and Howie plan to leave home, but they need money to do it. So they get the idea to break into old John Harrigan's house during his birthday party, where the two want to steal two weapons from the Second World War . Gary knows Big John , as everyone calls him, as he is a regular customer of his. When John surprises them in the theft, the two boys escape, but Big John manages to tear off the back pocket of Howie's pants. He suspects that Gary is behind it and speaks to him the next day about it. With the piece of trousers as evidence, the boy can't deny it and wants to bring the pistols back to him, but they've already sold one.

When Howie brings the gun back, Big John says he owes him $ 1,000. Howie offers him to work off the money. In response, Big John asks what he has to offer that is worth $ 1,000? The situation is interrupted by a phone call and Howie leaves the house quickly. Big John's 19-year-old lover Scott, who also lives in his house, noticed this and blames his friend and says he should be ashamed.

Howie's father is arrested, so Howie thinks he has left when he gets home. Howie was arrested that same day, as were the other two gang members. One after the other, they are picked up by their parents from the police station. Howie can't leave until hours later because Big John is picking him up. Howie came across several photos in his home, including Gary, but also a bare-chested boy of about 11. Scott sees him doing it and warns him not to take John away from him.

After Howie has washed himself at Big John's, he comes into John's room wearing only a pair of underpants because he thinks he wants to sleep with him. But Big John doesn't intend to do that. He talks to the boy and tells him that his father did not leave him, he was just in prison. When Howie finds out, he bursts into tears. The next morning, Big John makes breakfast in a good mood and drives Howie to jail so that he can visit his father. On the way back, Big John stops at the point of the expressway where the young hustlers can be found. Shortly after he stops, Scott drives next to him and shoots Big John out of jealousy.

At the end you see again - like at the beginning of the film - howie balances along the railing of the expressway and says that many people (including his mother) died on the expressway and he hopes it doesn't get him.
