Transient epileptic amnesia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a very rare special form of temporal lobe epilepsy . The name was first proposed in 1990, earlier descriptions were made in 1974 as ictus amnesticus, in 1988 as epileptic transient amnesia and before that as epileptic amnestic attacks [EAA].

The epileptogenic focus is assumed to be in the hippocampus area. TEA manifests itself in frequently recurring - ictal and thus anterograde - memory disorders as the sole symptomatology, combined with persistent retrograde amnesia . The latter usually includes autobiographical content, but can also only include a few special biographical events. The most important differential diagnosis to TEA is transient global amnesia (TGA).

The recurrence of memory disturbances at short intervals, EEG abnormalities mostly temporal in the form of peak potentials , rapid improvement with anticonvulsants and the additional retrograde memory disturbance are primary criteria for differentiating TEA from TGA. Further differential diagnoses to TEA are so-called amnesic strokes , delirious states and dissociation . TEA is mostly seen in the elderly. It has not yet been clarified whether it precedes a future development of dementia .
