Auto mechanic and high school graduate Dwayne McLaren would like to leave his home, the small town of Cut Bank, behind him quickly. Alone, there is a lack of money. The problem seems to be resolved when, apparently by chance, he and his girlfriend Cassandra films the postman Georgie Witts being shot in a field outside the city because the postal company is willing to pay $ 100,000 for evidence of crimes against its officials . He shows the video to the sheriff, who starts an investigation but does not find a body. However, Dwayne, Georgie and the Native American Match only faked the murder to get the reward. Georgie is hiding in property owned by Cassandra's father, "Big Stan" Steeley. He discovers Georgie on the property, but is knocked down by the latter with a pair of tongs.
The mentally battered Derby Milton is meanwhile looking for a package that Georgie should have delivered on the day of his "murder". Particularly large footprints near the crime scene help him track down Match. He goes to see him, and there is an argument in which Match falls into a knife and dies. Milton finds clues about Georgie's whereabouts in Match's house. He looks for him, there is another argument, Georgie betrays his accomplice Dwayne and Milton kills him with a cow's foot. When the sheriff arrives, he finds both Georgie's body and the unconscious Big Stan who is hospitalized.
At the Miss Cut Bank election event, which Cassandra is also attending, Milton meets Dwayne. He flees to his house in the car. Milton follows him and puts him there. Cassandra arrives and both are forced by Milton to drive to Dwayne's rental garage in his car to find the package.
After the surrender, Milton tries to kill the two, but is surprised by the sheriff and shot.
The sheriff subsequently inflicts the missing gunshot wounds on Georgie's corpse in order to deceive the Post's investigator, Joe Barrett. Since he discovered Dwayne's plan, Dwayne is forced to give up the money in favor of the sheriff.
