Jack Reacher: No turning back

Jack Reacher is an American action or crime film directed by Christopher McQuarrie from 2012. It stars Tom Cruise , Rosamund Pike and Richard Jenkins . The plot was freely adapted from Lee Child's novel Sniper . The US theatrical release was postponed from December 16 to December 21, 2012 out of “respect for the victims of the Newtown rampage and their families”. The cinema release in Germany was on January 3, 2013.

action

In Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , a man drives a van into an apparently reserved space in a parking garage on the Allegheny River . Directly on the other side of the river you can see the sports stadium PNC Park . After inserting a coin into the parking meter, he prepares his sniper rifle. He aims and shoots five apparently randomly selected people on the promenade in front of the stadium. Then he escapes in the van.

When the police arrive, led by Detective Emerson, the latter discovers a cartridge case and the coin that was used to pay for parking. A fingerprint from the coin is checked against the criminal record, and there is a match with James Barr, a former U.S. Army sniper. When the police searched his house, they found the van, the cartridge-making equipment and the murder weapon. Barr found sleeping is arrested.

During interrogation by Emerson and District Attorney Alex Rodin, the silent Barr Get Jack Reacher writes on a notepad. When investigators are still puzzling over how they can contact the Reacher, who is roaming around the United States anonymously - a highly decorated war veteran with impressive achievements as an investigator in the military police - he turns up in their office after seeing a report on the case on the news . Meanwhile, Barr was brutally assaulted by fellow inmates during a prisoner transport and is in a coma. Reacher meets Barr's defense attorney, Helen Rodin - the prosecutor's daughter - who is trying to save Barr from the death penalty.

Helen offers to see that Reacher see the evidence if he does his own investigation in return. Reacher replied that he was not interested in protecting Barr from the death penalty, and reported that Barr killed four people with the sniper rifle during the Iraq war. He was never charged for this act and the act was covered up in the US Army, since the investigation revealed that those killed had previously committed serious crimes themselves. Reacher strongly warned Barr that if he persisted, he would come back to bring him to justice.

Reacher agrees to begin an investigation, on condition that Helen visits the victims' families to talk to them. Reacher investigates the crime scene and reads the files. From the beginning it struck him as strange how smoothly the investigation went and that the perpetrator was careless enough to use a parking meter and leave his fingerprints. He finds further inconsistencies. A trained marksman would have committed the murders from a van by the nearby Fort Duquesne Bridge , where - among other benefits - he would have had the sun on his back, not against him, at that time of day. Helen Rodin and Jack Reacher discover that the owner of a local construction company was the real target of the attack. With the simultaneous killing of other, randomly selected victims, this fact should be covered up.

After a provoked brawl, Reacher realizes that someone is trying to stop his investigation. He also believes the perpetrators have allies in the ranks of the police. Reacher is later blamed for the murder of the young woman who was paid to provide a bogus reason for the brawl. Reacher escapes the police and follows Barr's footsteps to a rifle range in the neighboring state of Ohio , whose owner, former U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Cash, only speaks to him after Reacher has demonstrated his sniper skills at the rifle range. Reacher finds Barr's relationship with the murderer here.

The real perpetrators are members of a Georgian construction mafia to which the killed businesswoman did not want to sell her company. The leader of this gang spent a large part of his life in a Soviet gulag and is only known by the pseudonym Zec Tschelovek (German roughly: prisoner man ). The gang kidnaps Helen with the help of their accomplice Detective Emerson and holds her hostage in a quarry to lure Reacher over. Reacher outwits the guards and uses Cash to kill them. In a construction container in which Helen is held captive, Reacher kills Emerson and confronts Zec. Zec is relaxed. He tells Reacher that the other gang members who were killed by Reacher were the only witnesses against him. So Reacher will be the one who - still suspected of murder - will go to prison. Reacher shoots Zec in the head. When the horrified Helen asks him about it, he tells her that he has brought justice.

Reacher and Cash flee as Reacher is a wanted man. Helen Rodin, however, promises to clear his name. When Barr wakes up from a coma, he tells Helen that he has no memories of the recent past. He thinks he is guilty. Barr uses photos to reconstruct how he would have committed the shootings. The fact that these considerations do not correspond to the actual course of events is an indication of Barr's innocence. In the final sequence, Reacher sits in a coach and intervenes in an argument between a couple.

production

The film was made by director Christopher McQuarrie, who had previously worked with Tom Cruise on the 2008 film Operation Walküre - The Stauffenberg Assassination . McQuarrie wrote the script together with Josh Olson, using the Lee Child book series of the same name as a template. The film was set in Pittsburgh . Paramount Pictures took care of the production .

In June 2011 Tom Cruise was offered the role of Jack Reacher . It was criticized that Tom Cruise was too small to embody the 1.95 m tall fictional character. Lee Child commented that it was impossible to film the literary work true to the original, but that he welcomed the portrayal by Tom Cruise. He also said the size of Jack Reacher was a metaphor for the fact that he was unstoppable, which Tom Cruise could portray "in his own way". When asked whether the role could not have been cast with a taller actor, he replied that in that case you might be 100% tall, but only "90% of Reacher", but with Tom Cruise in the role, "100% Reacher "with 90% of the body size.

synchronization

The German synchronization of the film was done by Berliner Synchron AG . The dialogue book comes from Clemens Frohmann.

"Jack Reacher [...] was [...] once a military policeman who not only praises down all ideals of masculinity that are now outdated, but also knows how to defend an overrational sense of justice after his discharge from service. Jack Reacher is the first attempt to house this hero figure in the hallowed halls of action cinema. An attempt because Jack has absolutely nothing new to offer that would be worth doing him the honor in the cinema. Jack is a little Bond , a little Ethan Hunt ( Mission: Impossible , 1995 ), a little Jason Bourne ( The Bourne Identity ) and a little bit Frank Martin ( Transporter , 2002 ). But Jack Reacher does not create a whole from all these half-cooked ingredients . "

- critic.de - the film site

“Christopher McQuarrie condenses and tightens the template into a brisk action thriller in which it is so exciting and fast that there is no time to think about the contextual connections. So it is hardly noticeable when the villains, who still brilliantly orchestrated their original coup, are pretty stupid in the later argument with Jack Reacher. What counts here is the cool attitude, narrative depth can hardly be expected. [...] 'Jack Reacher' is an exciting and entertaining action thriller with a cool Tom Cruise and a high number of hits, albeit without any major highlights. "

- Filmstarts.de

Hard-boiled drama , based on 1970s action thrillers, about an avenger who, in ' Dirty Harry ' fashion, ensures order bypassing the rule of law. A straight-narrated film that is ostentatiously narrated with action-show values typical of the genre and stands out from the majority of similar films, especially because of its cast. "

- Lexicon of International Films

Referring to the fact that the villain is played by Werner Herzog :

“In any case, Herzog surrounds his character named 'The Zec', about whom one only learns that she spent a long time in a Russian prison camp, with a mysterious and threatening aura, making her an adequate opponent of the title hero, who is also a phantom is introduced. That makes this solid, but not particularly original genre film something special. "

- epd film

“This American genre film is a curious eye-catcher for fans of the new German cinema. And anyone who likes Tom Cruise as an action hero will be happy that a sweatshirt and leather jacket still look like they did in the days of ' Top Gun ' at the age of 50. "

Financial success

The film grossed approximately $ 200 million worldwide.

New edition as a series

In November 2018 it was announced that the Jack Reacher film series would be reprocessed as a series.
