Tentpole

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As tentpole (English: tent pole) is called in the film industry , the most important film publication of a film production company in a given year, by the producers expect that it to blockbuster with the highest box office is. The term goes back to the fact that such a film as a tent pole should have a "supporting" function for the production company.

A tentpole is supposed to compensate for financial losses from flops through its financial success . In order to achieve this goal, it has to address the broadest possible target group (" Four-Quadrant Movie "). If such a film, the production of which is often associated with a considerable production budget, does not meet its expectations at the box office (“box office bomb”), this can lead to considerable financial problems for the film production company. That is why tentpoles are often film adaptations of well-known books or comics, where you want to transfer the popularity of the originals to the film.

Successful tentpole releases, on the other hand, often result in sequels and thus establish a franchise .

After in 2012 with John Carter - Between Two Worlds and Battleship two films planned as tentpole releases had only recaptured a fraction of their costs, the increasing concentration of the film studios on tentpole releases was critically discussed.
