Chester Conlan Carter (born October 3, 1934 in Center Ridge , Arkansas ) is an American actor .

Life

Carter grew up as the younger brother of John Carter on a farm in Missouri . He attended Southeast Missouri State University between 1952 and 1954 and then served two years in the United States Air Force . He then moved to San Francisco , where he studied acting and worked on local theater productions. In 1959 he moved to Hollywood and quickly received television roles. He guest starred in the Western series Gunsmoke , Rawhide , Rifleman , The Virginian and Bonanza and had a recurring role in The Law and Mr. Jones on the side of James Whitmore . He gained wider recognition with the US public through his portrayal of Doc in during the Second World War, playing series Combat! at the side of Vic Morrow . After the series ended, Carter was still a guest star on television until the mid-1980s, but he did not have a notable film career. Then he retired from the film business and worked as a pilot.
