action

Neil, who comes from the small town of Bartlesville in the US state of Oklahoma , meets the divorced Ukrainian Marina on a trip to Mont-Saint-Michel . She raises her daughter Tatiana in Paris. Neil then throws himself into a devoted affair with Marina and together they return to Neil's hometown a little later. Tatiana also seems to feel at home in the USA at first. But reality gradually catches up with the three protagonists, Tatiana becomes more and more unhappy, and the relationship is slowly beginning to crumble. Marina, who feels more and more lost when she is far from her home, turns to Father Quintana, who like her lives in exile and quarrels with his faith. Neil and Marina are growing apart, so that Marina returns to France with her daughter when her visa has expired. Neil then approaches his old sweetheart Jane again, and the two begin a liaison. As this gets closer and more intense, Neil realizes that he cannot forget his great love Marina. Marina, whose daughter is now living with her biological father, also longs for Neil, so she moves back to the USA. They both marry civilly and in church and have a happy marriage for a while. Over time, however, disputes increased, the couple yelled at each other, furniture was broken, and there was even threat of a suicide attempt. When Marina cheats on Neil and confesses to him, the relationship finally breaks up. Neil hires a divorce lawyer and now also confides in Father Quintana, who is about to be transferred to another region, but still has an open ear for Neil. It turns out that Neil and Marina's longing for human love and the Father's desperate struggle for God's love are very similar. The end of the film shows Neil in a house in the USA while Marina wanders through the fields of Normandy. Mont-Saint-Michel reappears in the background.

criticism

“The most poignant thing is Terrence Malick's intention. He clearly develops the story to convey the myriad of faceted feelings and their expression. "

- Stanley Kauffmann : The New Republic

"This film looks more like a parody of an art-house film than a work created by a director who is often referred to as the poet of cinema."

- Jim Schembri : 3AW

"More lyrical reflection than narrative cinema, the film uses flowing images, off-texts that poetically condense the thoughts of the protagonists, and music-sound collages, a multi-layered, contradicting view of human love in the tension between longing for eternity and transience."
