action

Bored of fame and success, Hollywood screenwriter Rick goes in search of love and the meaning of his life. He meets new and old love affairs, celebrates wild parties and roams through barren desert landscapes or high-rise canyons. He recalls the beautiful moments of his failed marriage to Nancy while he embarks on an unhappy affair with dark-haired Elizabeth. He also faces long overdue conflicts with his aging father and brother.

background

The film's title is based on the tarot card Knight of Cups (Engl. Knight of Cups ), which represents the dreamer who is looking for in life after love and success. The film is divided into different chapters, each with the name of a tarot card.

reception

After its premiere at the Berlinale, the film received mostly benevolent reviews. The description of the festival says, “In Terrence Malick's seventh film, too, a floating camera accompanies the search movements of a torn hero”. Malick's “series of images contrasts a cold, functionality-oriented architecture with the archaic beauty of nature”. The women who mix in “Rick's inner monologue” stand for “different principles of life: one lives in reality, the other embodies beauty and sensuality.” Swiss radio and television were harshly criticized and rated the film as simply flat : "But the cinematic qualities, which have something melancholy-masochistically intoxicating about them, do not help the fact that the emptiness of the main character corresponds to the emptiness of the film."
