The Campocologno power plant , also known as the Brusio power plant , is a storage power plant in Switzerland . It is located in the canton of Graubünden in the valley Puschlav , the village of Campocologno in the municipality Brusio . The plant is owned by the energy supplier Repower and consists of two plants.

Between 1904 and 1907 the Campocologno 1 power plant was built at 530  m above sea level. M. It has an installed capacity of 47 MW and produces 183.5 GWh annually at a drop height of 418 meters . When it was commissioned, it was the power plant with the highest gradient in the world. The original plans to set up factories for the electrochemical industry in the Poschiavo and thus to use most of the energy produced on the spot quickly came to nothing. Instead, high-voltage lines were built to supply the industrial centers in Lombardy . The original nacelle with twelve Pelton turbines was replaced by a new building with two Francis turbines from 1967 to 1969 .

Lago di Poschiavo , six kilometers away, serves as a storage basin , from where the water is first fed through a tunnel to the Monte Scala moated castle ( 937  m above sea level ) and then fed to the power plant via a pressure pipe . An 800-meter-long, meter-gauge funicular railway for operational purposes runs alongside the above-ground pressure line .

In 1950 the Campocologno 2 power plant , also known as Centralino , was built a little further down the valley . It uses the 13 meter high residual gradient between Campocologno 1 and the border with Italy . The installed capacity of the Kaplan turbine is 1.5 MW, an additional 4.3 GWh of electricity are produced annually. The water is conveyed to Tirano in a tunnel owned by the Enel company .
