occupation

Germanikus is a film comedy from 2004. It takes place in the 4th century and is about a Germanic ( Gerhard Polt ) named Germanikus, who is abducted to Rome and unintentionally causes mischief.

action

In the framework of the story, Gerhard Polt gives a modern cabaret view of the events of that time in a small office of today. The consumer society is also an issue here.

The voracious German Hermann, later Germanikus, lives peacefully in a small village, in Sumpfing. When they go to war to fight the Romans, Germanicus stays at home to take care of women and children. Unintentionally, he is now the object of lust for the entire world of women.

When the warriors return after a defeat, the leader Bodo notices that his wife is pregnant. Germanikus has to flee. Thereupon he is captured by the Romans and taken to Rome.

There he is bought as a slave by the resourceful businesswoman Tusnelda. He quickly rises in her favor. Nevertheless, he wants to flee, which he succeeds. In a brothel he falls in love with the black Saba, who does not reciprocate this love. There, he runs the prefect in his arms and becomes a taster of the emperor. He survives a toadstool (his favorite dish) placed in front of him by order of the prefect , the emperor does not. Germanikus flees, but is caught again, this time together with Saba. Both now have to fight a tiger in the arena, which, luckily, is Saba's “house tiger”. Again the prefect tries to kill Germanikus, this time with poison. But the emperor accidentally dies and Germanikus is proclaimed the new emperor. Now he can return to his beloved homeland in peace with his new wife Saba.

information

  • Historical context: In the period in which the film is set, the so-called migration of peoples begins , in which different peoples largely migrated through Europe. Germanicus as emperor of the Roman Empire is, so to speak, an anticipation in history. A hundred years later the first Germanic king ruled. Later, when Westrom had completely disappeared, various Germanic tribes settled in Italy.
  • The name Germanikus appears in the annals of Tacitus . Germanicus is not a Teutonic here, but the historical Roman general Nero Claudius Germanicus , who led the war against the Teutons.
  • The shooting of Germanikus took place in the Cinecittà studios in Rome, where, among other things, half a Colosseum was recreated. Shortly before, parts of Gangs of New York by Martin Scorsese were filmed here.
  • The film was cut and dubbed several times, after differences between the producer and director, said Hanns Christian Müller in an interview. The film was originally scheduled to hit theaters in late 2001 (the year it was shot). In fact, it wasn't released until 2004. Polt said in the SZ about the delay: He was "pissed off".
  • Despite the star cast, the reviews of this film were mostly bad.
