The Invisible Circus is an American drama directed by Adam Brooks from 2001. The film adaptation goes back to Jennifer Egan's debut novel The Invisible Circus . Seven years after the death of her sister Faith, played by Cameron Diaz , her younger sister Phoebe, played by Jordana Brewster , sets out on her trail through Europe to learn more about the last few months of her sister's life and the circumstances of her death.

action

Phoebe O'Connor and her older sister Faith have a close relationship. When the young American Faith went on a trip to Europe in the early 1970s, she kept sending her sister postcards from the various stages of her trip. When the mother and sister receive the bad news that Faith is dead, it remains in the dark how she died. In 1977 her now 18-year-old sister Phoebe followed her footsteps through Europe after graduating from high school . She really wants to know what happened to her sister. In Paris she meets Wolf, Faith's former friend. After Phoebe does not give up, he tells her that her sister pursued very radical political goals and joined the German terrorist organization Red Army Fraction and was involved in bank robberies. She made him promise that he wouldn’t tell mother and sister about their double life.

Since Wolf doesn't want to let Phoebe travel on alone to Portugal , where Faith died, they travel together. There it also happens that both sleep together. They are very physically attracted to each other. When they have reached the last station in Faith's life, Wolf tells her the whole truth. After Faith felt responsible for the death of a young man who had a wife and children, she tried to leave the terrorist organization. She and Wolf traveled together from Berlin to Portugal to gain distance. There Faith, who, according to Wolf, probably wanted to make amends with her death, jumped off a cliff and broke her neck. Phoebe says sadly that she only managed to make more people unhappy.

The young woman returns home to her mother. Her knowledge of her sister's double life makes it easier for her to cope better with the death of Faith.

Reviews

  • Carla Meyer wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle , “that Cameron Diaz has limited acting skills, which helps her in the role of a teenage terrorist. The portrayal of Jordana Brewster is unbelievable. The film shows the personal and family instability. "
  • The lexicon of the international film judged: “While the amalgamation of the lyrical road movie with (flashback) memories of politically explosive times largely fails, the film with excellent casts in the leading roles develops some strong moments of personal relationship processing in the psychologically coherent character constellations.
