Patrick Bergin

Patrick Bergin (born February 4, 1951 in Dublin , Ireland ) is an Irish actor .

Earlier life

Patrick Bergin grew up in a working class family in the suburbs of Dublin. He is one of five sons. His father, who originally studied with the Spiritans and wanted to be a priest, was an Irish Labor Party politician and Senator in the Parliament of Ireland . Bergin left school at the age of seventeen without a degree. He then moved to London , where he kept himself afloat with various activities. Among other things, he worked during the day as a postman, construction worker and in a library.

Bergin also attended evening school and was thus able to catch up on his missed school leaving certificate. During this time he was also a member of a theater group and discovered his passion for acting. He then completed a drama degree , which he completed with a bachelor 's degree. At first he worked as an English teacher for a few years, teaching difficult-to-educate young people and children with learning disabilities. In 1980 Bergin finally got a full-time job as an actor in a repertoire theater .

Career

As a film actor, Bergin made his debut in a minor supporting role in the British television drama Those Glory Glory Days . For the role in the television drama Morphine and Dolly Mixtures (1990) he won the Welsh BAFTA Award (BAFTA Cymru Award) in 1992 . 1990 Bergin was given the lead role in the adventure film Mountains of the Moon . The film received decent reviews and also increased Bergin's notoriety in Hollywood .

This enabled him to take on one of his most famous roles in The Enemy in My Bed a year later . For his role as the tyrannical husband of Julia Roberts , he was nominated for the Saturn Award in the category Best Supporting Actor . Also in 1991 Bergin took on the lead role of Robin Hood in the movie Robin Hood - A Life for Richard the Lionheart . Jürgen Prochnow and Uma Thurman played at his side . In the same year Bergin was also in the horror film Highway to Hell in a supporting role in front of the camera.

In 1992 he played the role of an Irish terrorist in The Patriot's Hour alongside Harrison Ford . In 1996 Bergin was able to take on the leading role in The Lawnmower Man 2 - Beyond Cyberspace , whereby the actor himself described this year as the low point of his career. In 1999 he was seen in the thriller The Eye next to Ewan McGregor . The following year, he played in the critically acclaimed film drama When the Sky alongside Joan Allen the male lead.

In 2001 Bergin played a supporting role in The Invisible Circus alongside Cameron Diaz . In 2002 he took over in the Italian-German co-production Dracula the role of the eponymous Count Dracula . In 2006 he was seen in the crime film Played alongside Val Kilmer and Gabriel Byrne .

Private and miscellaneous

Bergin married his wife Paula Frazier in Trinidad and Tobago in 1992 . The couple have a daughter together. His brother Emmet Bergin is also an actor ( Die Journalistin ). He is also occasionally musically active as a singer and was able to land a top 10 hit in his home country Ireland with the song The Knacker .
