action

England in the Middle Ages at the time of the Crusades : The Normans who invaded the British Isles live side by side with the Anglo-Saxons . The impoverished nobleman Sir Robert Hode lives under the protection and favor of the local Baron Roger Daguerre and hates the occupiers. Daguerre thinks like him, but does nothing about it, since he gives in to the Normans and works as a judge. As guardian, he wants to marry his niece Marian to the Norman nobleman Sir Miles Folcanet and hopes for a rich dowry.

Hode's smoldering hostility breaks out during a hunt while protecting a poaching miller from Folcanet. As a repeat offender, the man's eyes should be gouged out. Folcanet then sued Hode before Daguerre. Daguerre wants to please Folcanet with a symbolic punishment of his friend. However, Hode hoped that he would get away with impunity, which led to the rift between him and the baron. Daguerre has Hode expropriated and declared outlawed.

Shortly before his arrest, however, Hode is able to flee with his faithful Will Scarlet and hide in the Sherwood forests. There he made the acquaintance of the likewise outlaw John Little, the testicle - who henceforth calls himself "Robin Hood" - introduces a group of other outlaws who eke out an existence in caves. Thanks to his accuracy with the bow , Hood and Will are included in the group, and through Robin's knowledge the ostracized can rob many travelers and nobles, primarily Folcanet and his loyalists.

When Hood lures Folcanet into a trap in the woods and robs him, he flirts with Marian, who is accompanying Folcanet. Over time, the clergyman Brother Tuck and a gunsmith joined the group, which soon stole large sums of money in the form of Daguerre's tax revenue. He then subordinates himself to Prince John and has to pay the debt out of his own pocket, while Folcanet rises in the favor of the heir to the throne and receives a troop of soldiers from the prince to hunt Hood.

Maid Marian, who also disdains her future husband, looks for Robin and his rebels in men's clothing and wins Hood's favor and love. Through a traitor from the ranks of the outlaws, who also brings Marian back, Folcanet receives unexpected help and wants to carry out the wedding. Robin and his companions sneak into the castle disguised as jugglers in order to prevent the wedding and to put an end to Folcanet's rule.

Marian refuses to marry in front of the altar, after which there is a fight between Robin and Folcanet and the latter is killed. Meanwhile, Daguerre is persuaded by Will not to crawl any longer for the sake of the Norman domination of their own wealth. The baron gives in and is reconciled with Hood, after which he gives his blessing on his wedding to Marian. In the end, he and Hood decide that Saxons and Normans should enjoy the same rights.

Reviews

Jack Sommersby wrote on efilmcritic.com that the film was "intelligent" and "disciplined". It could exist alongside the film Robin Hood - King of Thieves from the same year.

The lexicon of international films recognized a “new film adaptation that strives for external authenticity”, whose “sedate, humorless staging and a leading actor acting without momentum and charm”, however, “makes us think with sadness of earlier, more successful film versions of the material”.
