Geoffrey Burgon (born July 15, 1941 in Hambledon , Hampshire , † September 21, 2010 ) was a British composer of ballet and film music .

Life

Burgon taught himself the trumpet and was a member of a jazz band at his Pewley Grammar School in Guildford .

He graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama , London , with the intention of becoming a professional musician. Eventually he discovered that he also had a keen interest in composition theory. At first he earned his living as a jazz trumpeter until, at the age of 30, he sold all trumpets and decided on a career as a composer.

The critics agreed with him and honored his Requiem in 1976 at the Three Choirs Festival , a festival in the churches of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester. His work is often placed in the tradition of Benjamin Britten .

The fluid and effortless language of his music harmonizes with the frequently used human voice, whereby Burgon can look back on many years of collaboration with the countertenor James Bowman .

In 1962 he married Janice Elizabeth Garwood, with whom he has a son and daughter. After a divorce, he married Jacqueline Krofchak (stage name Kroft), a Canadian pianist and singer , in 1992 . They have a son together.
