Having uploaded old daughter to the Internet because of violence against a boy sexual images of his fourteen years was fired from his agency, attracting the widowed former US police chief Bill Hixon with Kelsey from Miami to England in Boston as Chief Constable to act . Although he immediately impresses his colleagues, no one seems very pleased to see an American official. The only exception is the young, eager detective Muriel Yeardsley ( Bronwyn James ), who is still in training and with whom Bill develops an affinity after an initially bumpy start.

Although the Criminal Investigation Department considers the case closed, Bill suspects that the Piano Man will serve as a scapegoat. He keeps digging to find out the truth. Boston's retirees are haunted by an aged robber who appears to be active again after a fifteen year absence. The feud between two farming families is fueled when the body of farm laborer Will Mowbray is found in a remote forest called "Dead Man's Wood". A murdered farmer is found in a suitcase floating on the river. In the course of the investigation, the victim's daughter, Charlene ( Nichola Burley ), cries herself on Bill's shoulder. The immigrant workers on the wage list seem suspicious, many of whom complain about their poor living conditions. The investigation quickly becomes more complicated when it emerges that the victim's wife, Lubica ( Katarina Čas ), recently acquired all of his property. | |||||

On his way home from work, Bill finds five charred bodies on a pyre burning by the roadside near a farm. Their autopsy reveals that all victims were shot in the head with a nail gun, but that this was not the cause of death. Rummaging through cases with a similar modus operandi, Bill uncovered a series of murders committed by Frank McGill ( Patrick Bergin ). The former killer has been under witness protection for his testimony as a key witness against his then gang boss since 1997. |
