Michael Daley Coulter (born August 29, 1952 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a British cameraman . He is a member of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC).

Live and act

While still in high school, Coulter began getting his first professional experience at a small production company that specializes in making documentaries. At the age of 17 he started his first professional activity in film as an editor for the 1969 advertising strip "Learning Space" . At 18 he received his first camera assistant for the documentaries "A Line for All Seasons", "Look to the Sea" and "Settled Out of Court: Children's Hearings in Scotland" . At the age of 20, Coulter was able to work as a cameraman for the first time, initially for documentary (16 mm) and advertising films (e.g. for the product 'Kleenex').

In 1979 the Scot started his film career as a camera assistant, initially (until 1981) in France : "Death Watch - the bought death", "Holidays for a week", The pigsty , The mole . In 1982 he returned to Scottish homeland for the weird comedy Local Hero and in 1987 shot the James Joyce adaptation "The Dead" in Ireland , John Huston's farewell work.

During these years, Coulter was occasionally able to find work as head cameraman, but initially only for British low-budget films. After years of working on unpretentious independent and cheap productions, Coulter rose to prominence between 1993 and 2003 with three extremely successful London city comedies. His work on Four Weddings and a Death , Notting Hill and Actually… Love - all comedies with Hugh Grant in a leading role - made Coulter a specialist when it came to putting the British capital in the best (romantic) light. In addition, his image design of Ang Lee's Jane Austen film Sense and Sensibility , another top production with Grant in the male lead, found great recognition in the professional world and earned him several film award nominations (including one for an Oscar ).

Michael Coulter has also photographed television films since 1974, including the long-term documentary "The Long Sprint" in the mid-1970s .
