The Dream Dancer is the German title of an American crime film from 1989 with Burt Reynolds in the leading role. Bill Forsyth directed and John Sayles wrote the script. The film accompanies a burglar duo on their raids.
action
By accident, Ernest (Ernie) Mullins and Michael (Mike) Lafebb break into the same house at the same time. Ernie is an old hand in his field and can still give the childishly naive little crook a few tips. Mike's previous break-ins served him to act out his peculiar preferences. He helps himself to the fridge, watches TV or measures the family's sheets - he collects the sheet dimensions. Enrichment in the true sense was never his goal. Since Mike is willing to learn, Ernie decides to involve the young man from the sneaker generation as an accomplice in the future. Together they empty many a safe.
The success goes to Mike's head and contrary to Ernie's advice, he lives on a big foot. Mike's dissolute lifestyle leads the investigative authorities on his trail. He will be arrested. But Ernie also has a solution for this case. He hires the shrewd lawyer Vincent Tucci as defense attorney. This instructs Mike to confess as many break-ins as possible, but without revealing Ernie's complicity. It is common knowledge that perpetrators who confess to a large extent enjoy advantages. 5 years imprisonment are the consequence. Through contacts with the underworld, Ernie can obtain milder prison conditions for Mike. That way Mike can survive the time in jail better.

- Trivia
When Mike buys gas bottles in the hardware store, a man appears in the background with a stainless steel sink. According to IMDb , this is a reference to Bill Forsyth's first directorial work ( That Sinking Feeling , 1980). There, a group of teenagers breaks into a warehouse to steal stainless steel sinks.
criticism
“A quiet crook comedy that cleverly avoids slapstick and sentimentality, but overall remains buoyant and pointless. Bill Forsyth has strayed too far from everything that made his previous films distinguished and adorable. "
"Although cult filmmaker John Sayles (" Passion Fish ") wrote the script, the spark is missing. Conclusion: Delicious moments, smothered in bravery "
“Bill Forsyth is one of the great and underrated directors in international cinema. The witty rogue comedy "Die Traumtänzer", based on a script by John Sayles, is one of his most beautiful works - not least because Hollywood warrior Burt Reynolds delivers a real brilliant performance as a serene safe cracker. "
Awards
The film was nominated in 1989 for the Critics' Prize at the Deauville Film Festival and the Tokyo Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival .
