The pigsty (Coup de torchon) is a French crime comedy or satire on the conditions in the African colonies of France by Bertrand Tavernier . The film was based on Jim Thompson's pulp thriller Pop. 1280 , which is set in Texas around 1910 and was released in 1964. It premiered on November 4, 1981, and was released in German cinemas on November 19, 1982.
action
In a backyard of the French colonial empire, the fictional village of Bourkassa Ourbangui in French West Africa in 1938: the lazy policeman Cordier is just as shabby as everyone else. He is not taken seriously, even mocked, by his superiors, the local crooks and pimps like Le Peron, by whom he allows himself to be bribed, and by his wife, who openly betrays him with "Nono", her alleged brother and despised. The local priest sums up his neglect of duty: the residents have not escaped the fact that he has never arrested anyone. But everything seems to bounce off Cordier, who in turn is cheating on his wife with the somewhat inexperienced Rose. When a colleague (Chavasson) in the next bigger city makes fun of him and recommends that he shouldn't put up with the pimps (whose pastime consists of shooting corpses in the river), he takes it to heart; on his return he shoots the two pimps after letting them sing another song. Now he knows no more inhibitions and also shoots witnesses such as the black “Friday” or the man von Rose, who beats her in public. Finally, he arranges for Rose to shoot his wife and Nono, who they accuse of embezzling money.
In the final shot, Cordier even aims at children playing, but lets the revolver drop again.
background
The film was shot in Senegal .
The original title Coup de torchon literally means "blow the mop" and stands for large-scale cleaning and mucking out. Tavernier has relocated the Augean stables that Cordier wants to clear out into the present of colonial Africa. He himself described the film as a "metaphysical comedy".
Awards
The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Film in 1983 and ten times for a César in 1982 . In 1982 he shared the award for the best French film of the Syndicat Français de la Critique de Cinéma (SFCC) with Claude Miller's The Interrogation .
Reviews
“A fascinating, but also difficult and ambivalent work, which allows political as well as ethical conclusions to be drawn about the value system of whites with its fragile moral principles. Outstanding: the acting. "
"With the brilliant Philippe Noiret as the main actor, in the wonderfully subtle décor by 78-year-old cinema architect Alexandre Trauner (" Children of Olympus ") and in front of the long, smooth tracking shots of Pierre-William Glenn, Tavernier has staged a nightmare - terribly beautiful and terribly funny . "
Trivia
Noiret has been one of Tavernier's preferred actors since his 1974 debut The Clockmaker of St. Paul . According to Tavernier, Noiret created the role after Robert Mitchum in El Dorado .
Availability
The film is only available on VHS in Germany.
