Captain Conan and the Wolves of War (Original title: Capitaine Conan ) is a 1996 French film directed by Bertrand Tavernier based on the award-winning novel by Roger Vercel with Philippe Torreton in the lead role.
action
In September 1918 the First World War, which had been raging in Europe for four years, draws to a close. On the Salonika front, the Bulgarians, allied with Germany, and the Allies fought hard.
In the last battle before Bulgaria's surrender, the Sokol massif was stormed by the Allies and Captain Conan and his fifty comrades in arms, mostly former prisoners from military prisons, played a decisive role. It is a special force that operates according to its own ruthless rules. They feel like the real heroes, which is why Conan no longer understands his former friend Norbert, who is now investigating crimes of his own troops for court-martial. After the armistice has finally been signed, Captain Conan's men come to Romania. Some form gangs, make the area around Bucharest unsafe and terrorize the civilian population. The war turned men into barbarians. Eventually the unit is transferred to the Russian border to fight the Bolsheviks .
When they finally return to their homeland, bourgeois life has no more room for them and they sink into insignificance.
Reviews
The lexicon of international film described the film as “a touching tragic comedy, carried by a brilliant leading actor who negates any meaningful function of war and creates an illusion-free image”. Cinema said Tavernier was "relentlessly illustrating the reality of war" and "condemning militarism as well as misunderstood heroism". The conclusion was: "Powerful reckoning with the war madness."
