The Passion of Beatrice (original title: La passion Béatrice ) is a film by the director Bertrand Tavernier and was made in 1987 on locations in Italy and France. It belongs to the genre of drama. This film had its world premiere in France on November 11th and was shown for the first time in Germany on June 1st, 1989.

According to his own statements, Tavernier did not want to show a scientifically exact picture of the Middle Ages. Rather, it was about the vision of a dark epoch in which the protagonists have to assert themselves; a cruel world that has to choose between barbarism and civilization.

criticism

“Shaped in gloomy images, the film, which is deeply pessimistic in its attitude, drastically intensifies existentialist despair, overusing the theme and image symbolism and thus losing its impact. From a Christian perspective, it challenges a mature audience to contradict and debate. "
