Olari Elts (born April 27, 1971 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Estonian conductor .

Life

Olari Elts began training as a choral conductor at the Estonian Music Academy with Kuno Areng from 1993 to 2000 and then learned to conduct orchestras at the Vienna Music Academy with Uroš Lajovic and again at the Estonian Music Academy with Roman Matsov and Eri Klas . He also took lessons from Jorma Panula and attended master classes with Esa-Pekka Salonen and Neeme Järvi .

From 2001 to 2006 he was general music director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. Alongside and afterwards he appeared with numerous orchestras of international standing, in Germany with the Dresden Symphony Orchestra , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt and Stuttgart . He is also a regular opera conductor at the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn.

Elts is the lead conductor of the NYYD Ensemble, which he founded in 1993, which focuses on the performance of contemporary music of the 20th and 21st centuries. He is also the artistic director of the Kymi Sinfonietta.

For the 2020/21 season he will take over the post of chief conductor of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra .
